Johann Leopold von Gudenus (born September 22, 1676 in Erfurt , † March 17, 1713 in Worms ) was auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Worms and titular bishop of Pergamum from 1711 to 1713 .

origin

He was the son of the lawyer Johann Moritz von Gudenus (1639–1688), Kurmainzer government councilor, city ​​school and university professor in Erfurt , as well as his wife Maria Katharina Böning from Duderstadt , sister of the priest Herwig Böning (1666–1721), episcopal commissioner of the Eichsfeldes , who donated the Marian column in Duderstadt. The grandfather Moritz Gudenus (1596–1680) was a Reformed preacher in Abterode in 1626 , became a Catholic in 1630, also entered Kurmainzer's service and died as a bailiff in Treffurt .

Johann Leopold's older brother Christoph Ignaz (1674–1747), titular bishop of Anemurium , worked as auxiliary bishop of Mainz in Erfurt, while his brother Friedrich Wilhelm (1683–1757) served as general field master of the Franconian Empire . The historian Valentin Ferdinand Gudenus (1679–1758) was one of her cousins.

Live and act

Baron Johann Leopold von Gudenus studied at the University of Erfurt and then chose the clergy. His legal inaugural dissertation for obtaining the doctorate from 1698 has been preserved. He was canon and Domdekan in Konstanz , just pin Dean of St. Paul of Worms .

The Bishop of Worms, Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg , appointed Johann Leopold von Gudenus on October 19, 1711 to be his auxiliary bishop and vicar general . As a privy councilor and director of the spiritual council in Worms, he was the administrative head of the government.

Johann Leopold von Gudenus died in the spring of 1713 and found his resting place in the newly built Carmelite Church in Worms, which was demolished in 1825. Johann Franz Capellini von Wickenburg (1677–1752) handed down his epitaph inscription in Volume 2 of the Thesaurus Palatinus . A funeral sermon about him has appeared in print.

Johann Baptist Gegg (1664-1730) succeeded him in 1716.
