Hermann Schmitt (teacher)

Hermann Schmitt (born August 29, 1888 in Horchheim near Worms ; † October 14, 1974 in Worms ) was a German high school teacher , church historian from the Rhine-Hesse region and local researcher.

Life

Hermann Schmitt attended high school in Mainz , where Heinrich Schrohe was his teacher. Hermann Schmitt completed his studies in Classical Philology and History in Gießen in 1913 with a doctorate. After military service and imprisonment, Schmitt became a teacher at the grammar school in Worms in 1919 . Because of criticism of National Socialism he was transferred to the grammar school in Mainz in 1933. Since 1942 Schmitt taught at the high school for boys in Rüsselsheim . In 1945 he returned to the Worms grammar school as the new director. In 1947 he was one of the founding members of the Society for Middle Rhine Church History . He was retired in 1953 and died in 1974.

Hermann Schmitt dedicated himself particularly to the history of the former diocese of Worms . In addition to biographical articles on Worms bishops, auxiliary bishops and pastors, he published a. a. two studies on the history of individual parishes. He also wrote a history of the Mainz high school and a history of the villages of Horchheim, Weinsheim and Wiesoppenheim near Worms. His estate is in the cathedral and diocesan archive in Mainz .
