Leopold of Gudenus

Count Leopold von Gudenus (born September 15, 1843 at Mühlbach Castle , † October 1, 1913 at Ulrichskirchen Castle ) was an Austrian member of parliament, diplomat, Land Marshal of Lower Austria and, most recently, Chief Chamberlain of the Emperor.

Life

Origin and family

He was the son of Gabriel Johann Georg Johann Baptist Virgil Anton Freiherr von Gudenus (1795–1879), and his wife Ludovika Theresia Ghislaine Freiin von Bartenstein (1814–1878). The descent of Baron Gabriel von Gudenus, who died in 1879, was raised to the status of Austrian count on August 16, 1907 in Ischl by the very highest resolution of Emperor Franz Joseph . The diploma was issued in Vienna on October 22, 1907. As one of 64 counts, the family received a hereditary seat in the manor house on June 14, 1907 , the upper house of the Austrian Imperial Council .

The grandfather was Johann Baptist Heinrich Franz de Paula Vinzenz Ferrer Josef Alexander Franz von Sales Albert Laurenz Freiherr von Gudenus (1753-1838), who was married to the sister of Prince Koháry , Mária Anna Gabriela Magdalena Theresia Dominica (1768-1822).

Leopold's older brothers were Heinrich Johann Baptist Graf von Gudenus (1839-1915), Austrian landowner in Waidhofen an der Thaya etc., as well as politicians (hereditary member of the manor house) and Josef Graf von Gudenus (1841-1919), Austrian landowner (Mühlbach) and politician ( Land Marshal of Lower Austria).

Education and career

Leopold Graf von Gudenus studied law at the University of Bonn and Vienna. In 1868 he entered the diplomatic service as an attaché in Rome. In 1870 he became legation secretary in Paris and in 1872 in St. Petersburg.

In 1877 he married Countess Ida Colloredo-Mansfeld, daughter of Prince Josef Franz Hieronymus von Colloredo-Mannsfeld . The couple had a daughter and a son who died young. His daughter Theresia Karolina Ludovika (1880–1930) married Johann Maximilian Alexius Aloys Maria Graf zu Hardegg on Glatz and in Machlande (1870–1945) in Vienna in 1899 .

From 1884 to 1894 he was in the Lower Austrian Landtag and held the office of Land Marshal of Lower Austria in 1893 and 1894 .

From 1885 to 1893 he was a member of the House of Representatives . Club membership: 1885 German-Austrian Club ; November 6, 1888 United German Left ( large estates loyal to the constitution ). Due to his appointment as Land Marshal of Lower Austria, he resigned from the House of Representatives.

In 1894 he became the chief steward of the Crown Princess widow Stephanie , followed by his service as Oberstjägermeister from 1897 to 1904, after which he was the emperor's chief chamberlain until his death in 1913.

As president of the Patriotic Aid Association of the Red Cross for Lower Austria and Federal Vice-President of the Austrian Society of the Red Cross, he was active from 1904 to 1909.

In 1911 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .
