Bartenstein (Austrian noble family)
The Bartenstein were a noble Austrian family in the 18th and 19th centuries. The originally middle-class family was founded by Johann Christoph von Bartenstein , Maria Theresa's advisor .
history
The Bartenstein were based in Thuringia and Lower Saxony. Johann Philipp Bartenstein (1650–1726) moved to Strasbourg and became professor of philosophy and head of the Strasbourg grammar school. In 1689 his son Johann Christoph von Bartenstein was born in Strasbourg. Johann Christoph converted to the Catholic faith in 1715 and moved to Vienna. He made a quick career at the imperial court. In 1719 he was from Charles VI. Elevated to the knighthood, in 1732 ( according to another source: 1733) he received the nobility diploma as imperial baron and rose to the position of Privy Councilor and Vice Chancellor in the Austrian State Chancellery. He became the closest advisor to the young Maria Theresa. His two sons founded two family lines, of which the younger one in 1847 and the older one in 1866 in the male line.
His sons and grandsons became high officials in the Austrian Netherlands and allied themselves with the Flemish noble families of Baron Osy von Zeegwaard and the Counts of Termeeren. Johann Christoph Bartenstein acquired numerous properties in Lower Austria, Moravia and Silesia , such as Hennersdorf and Johannesthal in 1739 , Ebreichsdorf Castle in 1749 , and a little later Tribuswinkel Castle . After the end of Austrian rule in the Netherlands in 1795, the younger line finally settled in Lower Austria. The main seat was Poysbrunn Palace, acquired and expanded in 1799 . After the death of Karl Freiherr von Bartenstein (1794–1847), the family estates of the younger line fell to the Vrints, who were related to the Bartenstein several times .
Coat of arms of the Flemish baron Osy de Zegwaart, related to the Bartenstein several times by marriage. The coat of arms can also be found on the family crypt in Falkenstein .
