Crypt of the Bartenstein-Vrints at the Falkenstein cemetery

The crypt chapel of the Barons von Bartenstein and the Counts Vrints zu Falkenstein was created through the renovation of an old church in the cemetery of the Lower Austrian market town of Falkenstein . The chapel-like structure was built in 1855.

history

Franz Xaver Schweickhardt describes the crypt as a remnant of the oldest church in Falkenstein and reports on the discovery of a column for the Eternal Light and a baptismal font. On this underground vault a church dedicated to St. George consecrated church, but no documents are available about its origin and disappearance. The underground construction was used as an ossuary . In 1819, Christoph Johann Freiherr von Bartenstein had the vault converted into a family crypt. Bartenstein was the owner of the Poysbrunn estate and son of Johann Christoph Bartenstein . In 1844 a chapel-like structure was placed on top of the crypt. On behalf of Maximilian Vrints zu Falkenstein , heir of the Bartenstein, the crypt was renewed and given a bronze coat of arms.
