The United German Left was a German freedom party in old Austria .

background

The United German Left was created in November 1888 through the merger of the German-Austrian Club with the German Club . The most important goals of the party were: preservation of the state unity of the Danube Monarchy , preservation and strengthening of the German influence in administration and government, protection for the liberal school. In November 1893, the United German Left took over government responsibility in a coalition with the Polish Club and the Hohenwart Club. In June 1895 the United German Left resigned from the coalition, whereupon the Windischgrätz government was replaced.

In 1896, a German Progressive Party was founded in several crown lands , which initially remained under the umbrella of the United German Left at the level of the Reich. But as early as November 1896, the Progress Party in Bohemia left the United German Left. The party was now falling apart. In the elections to the House of Representatives, the German liberal camp lost numerous seats to the German nationalists . After the Progress Party and the constitution-loyal large estates left the United German Left, part of the remaining “Old Liberals” formed the Free German Association from 1897 onwards .
