The Neuhaus castle is the restored ruins of a hilltop castle above the Stubenberg gorge in the Styrian municipality Stubenberg in Hartberg-Fürstenfeld .
history
The castle was built as a fiefdom by the Stubenberg family in the middle of the 14th century , and in 1375 a Hans von Neuhaus is mentioned in a document. Other owners - first mentioned around 1455 - were the Drachsler family. In 1506 Neuhaus came to Sigmund Drachsler, who had it rebuilt in its present form after a fire in 1541, which also destroyed the archive.
In 1663 Georg Andree Freiherr von Wurmbrand-Stuppach acquired the rule. He strengthened the castle considerably in view of the threats in the Turkish wars and by the Kuruzen . The administration of the seat was finally moved to Schielleiten .
Around 1800 the castle was almost completely destroyed by a lightning strike. In 1809, the administrator of Schielleiten, Josef Ferdinand Grengg, acquired the Neuhaus estate with the ruins, which however came to the baron Ferdinand von Gudenus just eight years later . 200 years of decay followed and it is only thanks to the unusual strength and thickness of the walls that there was still enough substance in 1982 to start the revitalization. In that year the Vetter von der Lilie family bought the ruins, had the rubble heaps in the hall removed, a new roof structure was put in place and the living quarters were largely reconstructed true to the original. Today, the renovation of the medieval residential tower ( Palas ) - with its 32 m height probably the oldest high-rise building in Styria - has largely been completed, two outbuildings are in progress. Holiday apartments were set up on the third floor of the hall.
The castle was awarded the Styrian landmark .
