Barrage in the gorge

History / economy

In the middle of the 14th century, Neuhaus Castle was built above the gorge exit in a strategically favorable location.

Around 1900, the construction of a hydroelectric power station in the gorge began by the municipality of Gleisdorf , which went into operation in 1905. It formed the basis for Feistritzwerke GmbH , which was merged into Feistritzwerke STEWEAG GmbH , a subsidiary of Energie Steiermark , in 2000 .

The granite quarry at the gorge exit, which has also been in operation since the turn of the century - in the 1960s by Konrad Beyer & Co - has not been in operation for many years.

tourism

The Stubenbergklamm connects the touristically developed regions of the Stubenberg Basin and the Styrian Apple Country. Through the development via the Feistritztal cycle path, the gorge is not only a connecting route, but also serves as a cycling, trekking and running route.

The hydropower plant in the gorge has been open to visitors as a show power plant at least since 2006.

A memorial stone was erected in the Stubenbergklamm for gendarme Karl Malli, who was murdered 130 years ago.

In the night of 13./14. May 2018 the gorge was closed after mudslides after heavy rain.
