Life

origin

Johann Baptist Gudenus comes from a family originally resident in Hesse, who was raised to the status of Austrian count in 1907 by Emperor Franz Joseph . He was the son of Philipp Friedrich Gabriel Heinrich Maria Graf von Gudenus (born June 11, 1877 in Waidhofen an der Thaya ; † February 27, 1948, ibid; married March 4, 1905 in Vienna) and Angela Maria Amalia Theodora Franziska de Paula , née Hardt (born December 14, 1880 in Vienna; † June 24, 1973). With the Nobility Repeal Act in April 1919, the Gudenus family also lost their title of nobility, Johann Baptist Graf (von) Gudenus became Johann Baptist Gudenus. As the only member of the Gudenus family, he was able to use the addition " Herr auf Els" until 1919 . His paternal great-uncle was the Land Marshal of Lower Austria Leopold Graf von Gudenus (1843–1913). His maternal great-uncle was the Imperial and Royal Head of Section Emil Ritter von Hardt (1842–1929).

From 1935 he no longer started for WAF, but for Weiß-Rot-Weiß Wien.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Gudenus competed over 400 meters and took fifth and last place in his prelude in 52.9 seconds, 2.9 seconds behind fourth-placed.
