Thannhausen Castle

The Thannhausen Castle stands in the town of Thannhausen in Styria .

history

1177 Castle Trennstein (Treunstein) is mentioned for the first time. The line of those from Kindberg zu Treunstein (Rudolf and Konrad) died out in 1190.

Treunsteiner (Ortolf, Wulfing) reappeared in 1240. This Wulfing was married to Diemut, the daughter of Ulrich von Liechtenstein , the minstrel. The residence later went to the Stubenberger in 1345/1350 and was administered from Gutenberg .

The castle is located in a valley and was built by Johann von Teuffenbach on the site of a former Roman country house, a villa rustica . A building inscription dated 1585 is located next to the portal, according to which the building was completed under Conrad Freiherr von Thannhausen and his wife Dorothea von Teuffenbach.

In 1617 the Stubenbergs sold the castle to Balthasar von Thannhausen, which then fell into disrepair.

After the Thannhausen family died out in 1686, the castle passed to the Khevenhüller and Wurmbrand-Stuppach families . With numerous renovations around 1720, the latter contributed to the fact that parts of the former Renaissance castle were given a baroque character. Since 1806 the castle has been owned by the Barons of Gudenus .

Arcaded courtyard

The renaissance castle is a large, three-storey four-wing building that encloses a spacious inner courtyard. The corners of the building are reinforced by diamond-shaped towers that protrude only a little from the wall. The large inner courtyard is enclosed on three sides by high tracts, while to the north it is closed off by a high wall, some of which is still surrounded by the old fortifications. It is provided with arcades of pillars or columns on all three floors, which also continue on the west side.

The old castle stables are only remnants of the cellar building.
