Te Paepae o Aotea , also known as Volkner Rocks (after Carl Sylvius Völkner ), are a group of andesite rock needles 5.2 km northwest of Whakaari / White Island in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty . They have a total area of around 1.5 hectares and reach a height of 113 m above sea level. They are separated from White Island by up to 200 m deep sea.
The islands of volcanic origin are part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone .
The area around the islands was declared a protected area in 2006. It is popular with divers because of the good visibility of 35 to 40 m, the picturesque scenery and the sea creatures.
