Gutenberg Castle stands on a protruding rock on the Raabklamm in the municipality of Gutenberg-Stenzengreith in Austria . Today the castle is privately owned. It is under monument protection ( list entry ).
Gutenberg Castle
The castle was founded by Luitold III. von Waldstein , who moved into the castle in 1185. The castle and the Gutenberg rule have been in the possession of the noble Stubenberg family since 1286 or 1288 , whose descendants are still resident today.
A two-storey outer bailey was added to the oldest component from the 12th century in 1490, which was secured by two neck trenches; the outer trench is now bridged, the inner trench was filled in. From 1567 the castle was rebuilt and expanded, mixing the medieval style with Renaissance components. The result was an irregular four-storey building complex with an almost pentagonal floor plan and also a pentagonal courtyard. The rustikaportal is on the south side. On the facade there is a baroque sundial , dated 1779.
Castle Chapel St. Pancraz
The oldest part of the castle is the southeast corner with the chapel of St. Pancraz . The chapel, originally built like a tower over three floors, both upper floors with galleries, at the bottom Romanesque with barrel vaults, was consecrated in 1365. The entrance is on the first gallery with frescoes, which are cut off at the top by a later entry of a vault. The frescoes from the 2nd half of the 14th century show St. Alfa, St. James the Elder , the Torture of the Ten Thousand , St. George and the procession of St. three kings . The Romanesque window behind the altar now has modern glazing.
Farm buildings
The farm buildings bear the dates 1659 and 1710.
Street chapels
On the access road is a chapel from 1721. The second chapel is from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. On the driveway there are also two stone figures, originally Wieden Castle near Kapfenberg, St. Anna and St. Johannes Nepomuk , both by Veit Königer , around 1770.
