Gutenberg an der Raabklamm was an independent municipality in Styria until the end of 2014 . Since 2015, it has been merged with the Stenzengreith community as part of the structural reform of the Styrian community . The resulting new community bears the name Gutenberg-Stenzengreith .

Geography and geology

location

Gutenberg an der Raabklamm is located in the Weiz district in the Austrian state of Styria . The community was created in 1952 by amalgamating the cadastral communities Garrach and Kleinsemmering.

Former parish structure

The former municipal area comprised the following two cadastral communities and towns of the same name (population as of January 1, 2020):

  • Garrach (494)
  • Small summer ring (769)

geology

The area of Gutenberg belongs to two tectonic nappes. On the one hand the Upper Eastern Alpine ceiling floor in the north and on the other hand the Central Eastern Alpine ceiling in the south. The northern part above the ceiling boundary is assigned to the Graz Paleozoic and consists of the Schöcklkalk , which was formed in the Devonian. The middle and at the same time largest area of Gutenberg directly below the ceiling boundary belongs to the polymetamorphic basement. In addition to phyllitic mica slate, there is also a lesser amount of plagioclase gneiss from the Permian Triassic period. A small area in the south of Gutenberg is striking, which consists of pegmatite formed in the Permian.

The south of the village is characterized by the Gleisdorf layers from the Sarmat and the Congeria layers, which were formed in the Pannon. Due to the clayey structure of this early Tertiary basin filling, which includes individual coal seams, one speaks of the "Lower coal-bearing series von Weiz" (Gleisdorf layers) and the "Upper coal-bearing series von Weiz" (congregation layers). A small area in the southernmost part of Gutenberg is occupied by a valley floor with recent river deposits, which belongs to the Holocene . The Raabklamm lies up to the dam in the Schöcklkalk zone and then enters a geologically crystalline area that initially consists of phyllitic mica schist, but finally of plagioclase gneiss.

Geology of the former municipal area

World of forms

The allocation of the large landscape types corresponds roughly to the geological classification. In the north of Gutenberg, about up to the level of the village of Garrach, one speaks of mountainous country. The middle part belongs to the hill country or Riedelland, which merges to the southwest in the area of the Kleinsemmeringbach in a valley level.

The relief energy is 690 m and results from the difference between the Sulzenwiese (1125 m) and the Stoffenmühle (435 m). This value is very considerable with a maximum extension of the area of about 7.2 km, which extends from northwest to southeast.

The valley cut of the Raab (Raabklamm) in the east of the former municipality is considered a special phenomenon . A second special feature is the location of Gutenberg Castle , which is located on a narrow rocky ridge that slopes steeply on three sides about 100 meters above the Raab. In addition, the formation of sinkholes and carts caused by strong karstification in the area of the Burgstallerhöhe and south of the Schachnerkogel should be mentioned. The presence of numerous smaller and some larger caves on the Schachnerkogel is also remarkable.

climate

Comparable climate elements for Gutenberg from the Weiz area (observation period from 1961 to 1990):

Precipitation
mean annual total 829 mm
temperature
January mean −2.1 ° C
July mean 18.5 ° C
Annual mean 8.7 ° C

Waters

The Raabklamm near Gutenberg

The most distinctive bodies of water in Gutenberg are, on the one hand, the Raab, which forms the border with neighboring towns in the east over a length of around 8.5 km, and, on the other hand, the almost 10 km long Kleinsemmeringbach in the west, which forms the border of the former municipality and of the district. The biological water quality of the Raab is classified as "low pollution" in this area, this corresponds to quality classes I - II.

Less significant rivers are the Schwarzgrabenbach (approx. 2 km), the Waschbach (approx. 1.2 km), the Rosenbach (approx. 3.5 km) and the Hartschmiedbach (approx. 2.3 km). All these brooks flow into the Raab.

The stock meadow ponds near floodplains should also be mentioned as standing water, with a total water area of about one hectare for fishing operations.

The total area of water is 9.81 ha, which is 0.7% of the area of the former municipality.

Floors

The demarcation of the different soil types is similar to the large-scale structure. In the north (Garrach) the occurrence of brown earth and silicate rock is dominant. In addition, but not so pronounced, you can also find relict pseudogley in this area. These types of soil ensure strong forest growth in Garrach. This is different in the south (Kleinsemmering), where the soil corresponds to a refined fen.

Vegetation and use

The considerable proportion of forest of around 855 ha (around 59%) is particularly striking, of which 755 ha are in Garrach. The natural vegetation, in the north the montane beech-fir forests of the peripheral Alps and in the south submontane oak-beech forests, largely correspond to the currently predominant vegetation. Among the conifers, in addition to fir, pine and larch, spruce mainly occurs. The deciduous forest is predominantly characterized by the beech, but oak, maple, linden and alder are also part of the current vegetation.

Almost 498 hectares, that is 34.3% of the total area, are used as agricultural land, 112 hectares of which serve as arable land. About 50% of this arable land is used for growing grain maize , the rest of the area is farmed roughly in equal parts with wheat, rye and barley.

Another 32 hectares (2.2%) are traffic areas, around 14 hectares (1.0%) are used as construction areas and 42.5 hectares (2.9%) are used as gardens.
