Hannes Missethon (born June 26, 1959 in the Trofaiach district of Laintal ) is a former Austrian politician of the ÖVP .

Life

Hannes Missethon grew up in Leoben as the son of the only ÖVP employee works council of Voest Alpine Donawitz, Hans Missethon . After attending the technical college in Kapfenberg and studying materials science at the Montanuniversität Leoben , which he graduated with a degree in engineering, he worked at voestalpine AG in Donawitz before becoming a self-employed management consultant in 1991.

Politically, Missethon was first active from 1991 to 1994 as ÖVP city party chairman in the SPÖ-dominated city of Leoben and then became district party chairman. In 1998 Missethon became a member of the Austrian Federal Council . After the National Council election in 2002 , he became a member of the Austrian National Council . In January 2006, the Styrian People's Party appointed him regional manager. Under Federal Party Chairman Wilhelm Molterer , he was General Secretary of the Austrian People's Party from January 2007 until the appointment of his successor Fritz Kaltenegger in November 2008 by the newly elected party chairman Josef Pröll . In the 2008 National Council election, he did not win a seat in the National Council.

Missethon sparked controversy with an interview in the daily newspaper Der Standard on September 14, 2007. Regarding the integration of migrants, he said, among other things, that it is not sufficient if they merely obey the laws of Austria; they also have to adapt their entire “order of life” to that of the Austrians. When asked about his opinion on a statement by the ÖVP governor of Lower Austria, Erwin Pröll , who described minarets as “something alien” , he agreed and rejected the erection of minarets because they were not part of Austrian culture.
