Geography and traffic

View of Battlewood from the northeast

Streitholz is located about five kilometers northwest of the district town of Heiligenstadt in the red sandstone hill landscape of the middle Eichsfeld . The highest elevation in the district is the Rumsberg (384.4 m). The Rothenbach flows through the village and flows into the Beber at Mengelrode .

The place is on the road between Mengelrode and Bischhagen (both districts of Hohes Kreuz). Streitholz is connected to Thuringian State Road 1002 ( German Fairy Tale Route ) via this road. Surrounding places are Bischhagen, Siemerode , the municipality of Freienhagen and Vogelsang in Lower Saxony . Streitholz is the smallest of the four districts of the municipality of Hohes Kreuz.

Streitholz can be reached via the " Heilbad Heiligenstadt " junction on federal motorway 38 . The next train station is also in Heiligenstadt.

history

The place is first mentioned in 1286 as Strietholz . It is a not uncommonly documented field name for a controversial piece of forest, a battleground that later became a permanent field name. See Grimm's dictionary (online) sv Streit 3). In 1323 the name Rodenbach (place on the red brook) is mentioned for the first time as a predecessor settlement, from the beginning of the 17th century the name Streitholz is common (1613 as Stritsholz , 1619 as Streidtholcz ).

Until the secularization , Streitholz and the surrounding areas belonged to Kurmainz . Later they were part of the province of Saxony . After the Second World War , Streitholz was part of the Soviet zone of occupation . From 1949 until reunification , Streitholz belonged to the GDR and was located near the inner-German border . In 1990 the short-lived independent municipality became part of the new federal state of Thuringia.

On January 1, 1991, the communities Streitholz, Siemerode, Bischhagen and Mengelrode merged to form the new community Hohes Kreuz, which has been part of the Leinetal administrative community since January 2, 1992 .

The Catholic branch church St. Johannes Evangelist is in Streitholz. About 89 people currently live in the village.
