Schönhagen is a municipality in the Uder administrative community in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld .
geography
Schönhagen is about eight kilometers west of the district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt at the beginning of a valley that opens towards the Leine . The area is characterized by limestone mountains, such as the Großer Iberg (487 m) in the east, the Röhrsberg (468 m) in the south and the Ochsenberg (458 m) in the west. In terms of traffic, the place can only be reached from the north via Landesstraße 2011 and Kreisstraße 108.
history
Schönhagen was first mentioned in a document in 1323. At that time the place was called Schornbrandshagen or Schornbrandshayn . He has been called Schönhagen since 1589. It belonged to Kurmainz until the secularization in 1802 and was under the jurisdiction of the von Hanstein family . From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 it was part of the Prussian province of Saxony . From 1945 to 1949 it belonged to the Soviet occupation zone and was part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Schönhagen was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 it has belonged to the re-established state of Thuringia.

67% of the population are Catholic, 10% Protestant. The local Catholics and their subsidiary church St. Michael belong to the parish of St. Jakobus the Elder , based in Uder , Diocese of Erfurt . The Lutherans belong to the parish of St. Petrus in Arenshausen , parish of Mühlhausen of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

The coat of arms of the municipality was approved on December 11, 2006. The bird of prey represents the common buzzard in the area , the three mountain without a raised central dome symbolizes the three mountain ranges Iberg, Hopfenberg and Heiligenberg and the color green highlights the forest and nature-rich surroundings of the place, which is located in a valley on three Sides enclosed by mountains and only accessible via an access road.

- As a project Kuhmuhne Schönhagen eV , a show garden was created on the club's premises . The main goal of this project is to grow as many original herbs, vegetables and spices as possible. In the meantime, over 600 mostly “forgotten” crops and ornamental plants have been shown. The facility is also known as the “flail show garden” , as the seeds largely come from the organic seed propagation of the flail seed GBR.
