Büttstedt is a municipality in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It belongs to the administrative community of Westerwald-Obereichsfeld .

Geographical location

Büttstedt lies in the valley of the Gieße in the Obereichsfeld between the forest areas Westerwald in the west, Wilhelmswald in the south and Hollau in the northeast. The place borders in the west on the nature park Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal . The Thuringian Basin extends to the east .

history

Büttstedt was first mentioned in 1124 as "Budestete" , until 1808 the name was subject to several changes. A late Gothic parish church was completely burned out in 1684 and was replaced by a new baroque building between 1731 and 1734. In 1902 a cigar factory was established, which existed until the fall of the Berlin Wall.

  • Memorial hall for the fallen of both world wars from Büttstedt: to the side of the church, at the entrance to the churchyard. It was built after the First World War. Today it also contains an altar and is used as a mourning hall. After the fall of the Wall, it was restored and expanded to include the fallen soldiers from Büttstedt in World War II. A plaque on the hall commemorates the two German soldiers who died on April 7, 1945 when the Americans marched into town.
