Berig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berig was a legendary king of the Goths according to the tradition of the Jordanes . There is no historical evidence of it.

According to their tribal legend ( Origo gentis ) handed down at Jordanes , the Goths came from an island called Scandza . King Berig supposedly took them on three ships, the slowest were the Gepids , to Gothiscandza . There, according to the Origo , they defeated the Rugians and Vandals . They then allegedly settled in Gothiscandza for five generations until they then moved southeast to the Black Sea under the legendary King Filimer .

The origin of the Goths from southern Scandinavia has not been proven archaeologically; in modern research this is also considered improbable and the report des Jordanes is regarded as a topical legend of origin. The presence in today's Poland in the 1st and 2nd centuries is confirmed by several ancient historians. There was also a Gothic burial ground near Gródek on the bow. A little further away was the skeleton of a woman who was buried in a ritual ship. This fact suggests a connection to Scandinavia. The Goths began to migrate to the southeast around the year 175, after having moved further and further south for generations in search of better settlement areas.
