history

The economic development of the village of Wellingerode, which was first mentioned in 1355, has been mainly determined by the carriage of salt and wine since the 18th century. Because of the poor agricultural income situation, the inhabitants had to earn their living as salt carriers, carters, bricklayers, miners and linen weavers.

On December 31, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the previously independent communities of Abterode, Alberode, Germerode, Vockerode, Weidenhausen and Wellingerode merged to form the new large community of Meißner.

Culture and sights

church

The Evangelical Church of Wellingerode (Meißner) (1) .jpg

The Evangelical Church in Wellingerode was built in 1869. The simple building is accentuated by a roof turret over the facade. The interior is a simple hall with a transverse organ gallery above the entrance. On the wall behind the altar hangs a picture by the late Wellingerode village painter Rolf Werner Stuss.

When the previous building, a wooden church built in 1667, became dilapidated and also much too small for the large number of people who attended church services at the time, today's church was built on the same site. The chronicle reports a tragic event in connection with the new building. Because the statics for the left side wall were obviously incorrectly calculated, the church was considered to be in danger of collapsing and had to be torn down and rebuilt. The builder Peter Gießler is said to have taken this to heart so much that he killed himself because of this mistake.

Because of its historical and urban significance, the church is a protected cultural monument. The church is surrounded by a number of courtyards that are listed as a whole for historical reasons.
