Neighboring places are Vockerode in the north, Abterode in the northeast, Alberode and Vierbach in the southeast and Rodebach in the southwest. The Vierbach flows through it .

history

Germerode was first mentioned in 1186. The monastery Germerode was mentioned as early as 1154/55 . It was the home monastery of many members of the Lower Hessian nobility. The Norbertine - Double Monastery is one of the most important buildings in northern Hesse . The Mönchhof estate used to be an outbuilding of the monastery.

On December 31, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the previously independent communities of Abterode, Alberode, Germerode, Vockerode, Weidenhausen and Wellingerode merged to form the new large community of Meißner.

Opium poppies with accompanying flora in Germerode: View of the Hohe Meißner.

The poppy cultivation in Germerode am Hohen Meißner began in 2009 on an area of 1.5 hectares, which belonged to the landlord of the Landhotel Meißnerhof, who owned some fields as a farmer and already operated an oil mill for rapeseed oil production. The morphine-poor opium poppy was grown , the seeds of which can be used in many ways in the kitchen for sweet and savory dishes. Thanks to their high fat content, the poppy seeds are also used to produce oil . Because the opium poppy is included in the Narcotics Act , cultivation is only permitted with the approval of the Federal Opium Agency .

Poppy cultivation established itself in just a few years. The cultivation area increased every year: in 2012 to 5.5 hectares, in 2013 to around nine hectares. In 2015 the pink cultivated poppy bloomed on an area of 15 hectares and in 2018 around 20 hectares were cultivated. The poppy requires a constant change of fields. If poppies were grown in a field in one year, poppy seeds should not be sown again in the same area for at least three years.

As the number of fields grew, so did the number of visitors. In 2017 it should have been 25,000, those responsible estimated. Thanks to the clever tourist marketing of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park , the poppy region has now achieved a high level of awareness throughout Germany.

The fields are not fenced and freely accessible. On a three to four kilometer path, with paths underlayed in places with straw, visitors can hike through the blooming splendor of several poppy fields and their colorful accompanying fields. Every year there is an extensive program of events around the flowering, which usually does not start before the end of June. Covered wagon rides, guided poppy flower hikes, “Proseccon nights” and a small poppy seed café became the “Mohntenne”.

The website of the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land and a "poppy phone" provide information on how far the poppy flowers have already developed.
