Niederhessen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niederhessen is a historical name for an area in northern Hessen ( North Hesse ).

The term Niederhessen originated in the Middle Ages for the so-called "Niederfürstentum" of the Landgraviate of Hesse , which was separated from the so-called "Oberfürstentum" ( Upper Hesse ) by the county of Ziegenhain until 1450 . It comprised the area on the lower Fulda , Eder , Schwalm , Werra and the Upper Weser with the Kassel residence as well as the cities of Homberg (Efze) , Melsungen , Eschwege , Felsberg , Grebenstein and Rotenburg an der Fulda .

After the division of the Landgraviate of Hesse after the death of Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous in 1567, the area became the heartland of the new Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel .
