-rode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The suffix -rode as part of place names indicates a " clearing name ". These were chosen for locations that were created on a cleared area. The so-called places were mostly founded in the clearing time in the late Middle Ages in the hill country or mountain foothills. Closely related are the suffix -roda , which is only found south of the Harz Mountains , -rade in the Westphalian region and -reuth , which is particularly widespread in the Vogtland region, while -rode compared to -roda and -reuth occurs mainly north of this mountain range. In the Rhineland and in the Bergisches Land corresponds to the -rath . A link with clan-related place names on -ingen is represented by the ending -ingerode . The name Walsrode , whose suffix goes back to Roding (en) , does not refer to clearing .
