The Alfa Romeo MiTo (internal ZAR 955 ) is a three-door coupé from the Italian automobile brand Alfa Romeo on the technical basis of the Fiat Grande Punto . It was presented to the press in spring 2008, shown to the public for the first time in summer 2008 at the British International Motor Show in London, and went on sale at the same time.

The name MiTo is made up of the abbreviations of the cities of Milan and Turin on vehicle registration plates. The first is the original headquarters of Alfa Romeo, the second the headquarters of today's Fiat group and production site of the vehicle. As an Italian word, the four letters mean myth . The name was found through an online appeal and rewarded with an Alfa Romeo Spider .

In 2018, production ended for the time being without a successor model.

Model history

The design of the MiTo is based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione . As is customary with a coupé , the side doors of the MiTo have no window frames. The tailgate is unusually small, which is beneficial to the rigidity of the body. The drive is equipped with an electronic differential lock. With an external length of more than 4 m, the MiTo is one of the larger vehicles in its class.

A special technical feature of the MiTo is the standard DNA ( Dynamic - Normal - All Weather ) system, which enables the vehicle dynamics control , differential lock, brakes, steering and engine to be adapted to sporty driving style via a three-stage switch on the center console .

Initially, there was a choice of two gasoline engines and one diesel engine, each combined with a manual six-speed gearbox. At the turn of the year a five-speed gearbox and a smaller diesel engine were added.

In autumn 2009 the MiTo became the first production car with hydraulic valve control . The MultiAir system is a selective control of each individual valve and enables more torque and more power with less consumption and fewer emissions. The most powerful version of the engine in the added top model Quadrifoglio Verde with electronically controlled shock absorbers delivers 125 kW (170 hp). MultiAir is combined with a start-stop system .

In 2010, a dual clutch transmission was introduced, optionally with additional controls on the steering wheel.

Since the beginning of 2011, both diesel engines have also been delivered with a start-stop system.

Facelift

In autumn 2013 the MiTo was slightly revised. Since then, the two-cylinder engine has increased its output by 15 kW (21 hp) to 77 kW (105 hp). The current model year can be recognized by its modified radiator grille with sharper chrome surrounds and a darkened frame for the headlights.

In the interior, the seat covers as well as the fittings and door applications have been changed. The MiTo'Impression was added to the range as a new basic model , while the Turismo equipment line was upgraded. In the course of the year, the sportiest model of the series followed, the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde. New engines are available as 1.4 TB 16V MultiAir TCT with 102 kW (140 PS), 3 kW more powerful. In addition, the consumption could be reduced by 0.2 liters.

From January 2014 the MiTo was available as Connect . The limited special model has the Uconnect infotainment system on board as standard and can be recognized on the outside by the titanium-gray rear light surrounds, dark-tinted windows and the Biancospino exterior color and black mirror flaps.

At the Geneva Motor Show 2016, a revised version of the MiTo was presented again. Among other things, the design of the front bumper and the lettering on the rear have been changed. The new brand logo was also introduced. The equipment is now divided into the MiTo , Super and Veloce lines . The latter replaces the previous top model Quadrifoglio Verde .

In 2018, the special Urban model appeared , a basic model that was upgraded with light alloy rims, rain and light sensors and exterior mirror caps in an aluminum look.
