Fiat Twin-Air

The twin-air engine is a two-cylinder in - line engine ( parallel twin ) with variable valve control ( MultiAir ) from the Fiat subsidiary Fiat Powertrain Technologies . The engine has been in use since September 2010. In 2011 it was named International Engine of the Year , where it was named both overall winner and winner in the categories of best engine under 1 liter, most economical engine and best new development of the year.

General

Fiat designed the twin-air engine based on the concept of downsizing .

In principle, parallel twin engines are mechanically simple and can therefore be manufactured inexpensively, but they also run more restlessly than engines with more cylinders. At least one balancer shaft is therefore required for an acceptable running smoothness in passenger cars . The main advantage of the two-cylinder design is its higher level of efficiency . This results from the better ratio of displacement to the inner surface of the combustion chamber ( A / V ratio ). The thermal losses over the cylinder wall, as well as the frictional resistance within the engine, are therefore lower than in a comparable engine with more than two cylinders.

The twin-air engine also has the MultiAir valve control. This is a variable control of the intake valves, with which the start of intake, intake duration and valve lift can be precisely controlled, which further increases engine efficiency.

The twin-air engine with 62 kW at 5500 rpm and turbocharging has been available in the Fiat 500 since September 2010 . The same engine is used in the second generation of the Lancia Ypsilon .

Other variants are a naturally aspirated engine with 48 kW (65 PS) and a more supercharged turbo version with 77 kW (105 PS). The Twin-Air can be combined with a dual clutch transmission and equipped for natural gas operation. The Twin-Air is 23% shorter and around 10% lighter than its predecessor from Fiat (1.2-liter 4-cylinder). This favors the combination with electric drives ( hybrid drive ) in order to reduce fuel consumption even further.

The Twin-Air engine was offered in 11/2013 in the following models of the Fiat group: Fiat 500 , Fiat 500L (natural gas & 105 PS versions), Fiat Punto , Fiat Panda (also natural gas version), Alfa Romeo MiTo (also 105 PS Variant), Lancia Ypsilon
