The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione (internal name Type 920) is a sports car for the Alfa Romeo brand that was built from 2007 to 2010 .

history

For the car, a concept vehicle with the same name was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in September 2003 , which differed in some technical details from the production vehicle and which forms the basis for the Alfa Romeo Nuvola concept vehicle presented in 1996 . In 2005, an open Spider version was shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance .

In 2004 and 2005 there were suspicions in motor journalism that the vehicle had little chance of mass production.

The production version of the coupé was finally announced by then Alfa Romeo chairman Antonio Baravalle in the spring of 2006 on the 4Car website and shown for the first time at the 2006 Mondial de l'Automobile . At first it was assumed that the total number of units should be 500 (Coupé 250 units and Roadster 250 units).

At the beginning of 2007, Alfa Romeo started production of the sports coupé at Maserati in Modena . The price was around 160 000 euros . It was limited to 500 pieces and ended in early 2009.

In March 2008, Alfa Romeo presented the final version of the 8C Spider at the Geneva Motor Show . As with the Competizione, 500 copies were produced by the end of 2010 and at a base price of 211 285 euros sold to selected interested parties.

Naming

The name is reminiscent of the Alfa Romeo 8C of the 1930s and refers to the eight-cylinder engine that serves as the drive. The Competizione expansion is derived from the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Competizione that took part in the 1950 Mille Miglia .

design

The body design comes from Wolfgang Egger , at the time head of Alfa Romeo's Centro Stile design center, and takes up the lines of the Alfa Romeo TZ and the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale from the 1960s.

technology

Its technical basis comes from the Maserati Coupé . A native of Maserati V8 - petrol engine to that of Ferrari was produced has 8C but more displacement (4.7 liters) and a higher maximum power of 332 kW, in the media it was later often given as 331 kW. The body is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The chassis is made of composite materials and was developed together with Dallara . As is customary in racing, the underbody is designed in such a way that aerodynamic lift is minimized at high speed . The car has an automated six-speed manual gearbox which, like in racing, is operated via switches on the steering wheel or can be switched to an automatic mode. The gearbox is installed on the driven rear axle ( transaxle design). At maximum acceleration of the car, 0–100 km / h can be achieved in 4.2 s, the top speed of the Coupé is 292 km / h.

The brake discs supplied by Brembo are made of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide . All around the vehicle is equipped with a by Maserati sports derived double wishbone suspension equipped.

Related vehicles

For the 100th birthday of Alfa Romeo in 2010, a special edition called the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale Zagato was presented - a mixture of the 8C and Dodge Viper ACR-X. Only nine copies were sold at a unit price of 500 000 euros produced.

In 2012, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera presented the Touring Superleggera Disco Volante, based on the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 8C, as a coupé and in 2016 the roadster version Disco Volante Spyder.
