Estabelecimento Prisional de Évora

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Estabelecimento Prisional de Évora is a prison in the Portuguese city of Évora .

It is located on the northeastern outskirts and has space for 45 prisoners. It is one of eleven prisons in the Évora judicial district, all of which are intended for male prisoners, with the exception of Odemira prison , which has female inmates.

In 2007, under the government of José Sócrates, it was rebuilt and upgraded from a regional prison to a maximum security prison with effect from January 31, 2008. Since then, prisoners with a previous function with the security forces, who were previously housed in the abandoned prison of Santarém, have been housed there. For example, there were two police officers here who were sentenced to four years in prison after physically attacking German student Adrian Grunert at the police station in Bairro Alto in the summer of 2008 , who had previously ridden outside of a car on the Lisbon tram .

Former Prime Minister José Sócrates has been in custody there since the end of November 2014.
