Bairro Alto
The Bairro Alto ['bajʀu aɫtu] , in English: Upper Town , is a district of the Portuguese capital Lisbon , which is located above the Baixa (Lower Town ) business district. The southern end is at Praça Luís de Camões . West there is the Rua do Século and (north) east through the Rua da Misericordia / Rua Dom Pedro V limited. Political administration is carried out by the Junta de Freguesia of Misericórdia .
Large parts of the upper town were spared in the catastrophic earthquake of 1755 . In the past, the quarter was mostly inhabited by craftsmen and simple employees. In the 19th century, the editorial offices and printing works of the city's most important newspapers (including Diário de Notícias and O Século ) settled in the district. In the course of technical developments, the paper rolls for printing became larger, which made it difficult to transport them in the narrow streets. Most of the newspapers therefore moved to other parts of the city. Today only the football newspaper A Bola has its editorial rooms in the Bairro Alto. Many intellectuals came to the neighborhood with the newspapers. Today, due to the high rents and the cost of buying an apartment, more and more wealthy, mostly young people are moving here.
The Bairro Alto is the city's pub district. A wide variety of bars and restaurants line up in the narrow streets. Traditional tascas (pubs) where fado is played for tourists and locals, chic new clubs and bars, old and new pubs. The Lisboners like to go out a lot and like to start a party evening in Bairro Alto. There are many small shops for fashion, accessories, CDs, etc., especially in Rua do Norte and Rua da Rosa .
Much of the area is closed to general car traffic. Access is only permitted for residents there. You can reach the Bairro Alto but with the Metro ( subway station Baixa-Chiado ), with the line 28E of the Eléctrico (stop Camoes Square) and the Ascensor da Glória .
