The 15th Mille Miglia , also Mille Miglia, Brescia-Roma-Brescia , took place on May 2nd and 3rd, 1948 and ran over 1,833 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.

Before the race

At the end of the 1930s, criticism of the 1000 mile race had also increased in Italy. After the Abyssinian War , which ended in 1936 with the subjugation of the Abyssinian Empire by Benito-Mussolini - Italy , the race was largely boycotted by non-Italian car manufacturers, racing teams and drivers. In 1938 a momentous incident occurred while driving through Bologna . The Lancia Aprilia of the two Italian amateur racing drivers Dr. Luigi Bruno and Angelo Mignanego had a serious accident when Mignanego lost control of the car on the rails of the tram at around 100 km / h and drove into a group of spectators. While the two drivers were as good as uninjured, ten spectators died in the accident, including seven children. When, shortly before the end of the event, a twelve-year-old girl was run over in another accident and died, the race was about to be abandoned. As a result of the eleven fatalities, the highest Italian motorsport authority banned the passage of town centers and inner cities during road races; that was the end of the 1000 mile race. After no race had taken place in 1939, when Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer won in 1940 a 165 km long circuit in the Po valley was driven through nine times.

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the race was held again in its old form two years later . The millions of dead in the war had eclipsed pre-war security concerns. When Clemente Biondetti and Emilio Romano won in the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Berlinetta Touring , towns and cities were once again driven through at full speed.

Manufacturers, teams and drivers

The first two Mille Miglias after the end of the Second World War, 1947 and 1948, are a predetermined breaking point in Italian motorsport. Interrupted by the war years, many racing careers came to a standstill. Some pilots, although they were getting on in years, resumed their activities after the war and met a new generation of young drivers who were at the beginning of their careers. With Tazio Nuvolari - winner in 1930 and 1933 -, Antonio Brivio - successful in 1936 - and Biondetti, the winner of 1938 and 1947, three former overall winners were at the start. Drivers like Piero Taruffi , Franco Cortese and Giovanni Bracco had already started their careers in the 1930s. The new generation was shown in pilots such as Alberto Ascari , the son of Antonio Ascari , who died in an accident in Montlhéry in 1925 , the only 20-year-old Umberto Maglioli , who had made his debut as a racing driver at the Targa Florio a month earlier and as a co-driver of Bracco on Start was.

The four Marzotto brothers, Gianni , Paolo , Umberto and Vittorio all made their racing debuts. In addition to the veterans Mario Tadini , Piero Dusio and Archimede Rosa , the later Formula 1 drivers Franco Rol and Consalvo Sanesi were also registered.

Carlo Chiti , who drove a Fiat 1100 , later designed racing cars for Ferrari , Alfa Romeo Motorsport and Automobili Turismo e Sport ; Ferruccio Lamborghini , who built up his own sports car company, competed in a Fiat 500 Topolino .

For Enzo Ferrari's Scuderia , the 1948 race was the first Mille Miglia to be contested with Ferrari branded racing cars . Regular driver Franco Cortese drove a Ferrari 166S with Spyder bodies. Ferrari signed Clemente Biondetti to do this. Biondetti was not one of the Commendatore's avowed favorite pilots. Since the Scuderia was founded in 1929, he had never offered the Sardinian, born in 1898, a cockpit. As the winner of 1938 and 1947, however, Biondetti could no longer be ignored. Biondetti drove a 166S with an Allemano coupé body . The relationship between the racing team owner Enzo Ferrari and Tazio Nuvolari was completely different. Since the beginning of the Scuderia's racing activities, Nuvolari had competed for him again and again and had won the first 1000 mile race for the racing team in 1933. In early 1948, however, Nuvolari's health was in poor health. The last six months he had spent almost exclusively in a sanatorium, where he was treated for his damaged lungs and severe bronchial asthma . Ferrari needed all of his persuasion to get Nuvolari off to a start. Nuvolari agreed only two days before the race.

Neither Maserati nor Alfa Romeo were represented by a works team. The new A6GCS were given to private teams. Alberto Ascari drove one of them. Also Cisitalia renounced a plant use, and also gave the cars on to private drivers. In 1947, the racing car manufacturer founded by Piero Dusio in 1943 was the surprise of the race. Nuvolari had to admit defeat in the 1.1-liter Cisitalia 202SMM Spider only to Biondetti in the 3-liter Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Berlinetta Touring.

The British Donald Healey Motor Company came to Italy as the only non-Italian team . The young company founded in 1946 by Donald Mitchell Healey was represented with four vehicles. One piloted Healey himself with his son Geoffrey .

A total of 232 teams were registered, 189 of which started the race.

Tazio Nuvolari's last big race

The 1948 Mille Miglia went down in motorsport history as Nuvolaris' last major race. What happened on the way from Brescia to Rome and back had almost more to do with an Italian opera than with a car race. Even today, the number of spectators along the 1,800 km long route cannot be precisely quantified. Several million people can read historical documents. As the race was broadcast live by some Italian radio stations, more and more people flocked to the track as the day went on to witness the dramatic drive from Nuvolari. The Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa , with which Nuvolari drove, was designed as a Formula 2 racing car and was more of a monoposto than a sports car. Nuvolari had no knowledge of the car and had not trained a meter on the track; he relied solely on instinct and experience.

He had his first accident on the way to Rome. The damaged left fender and bonnet were thrown away without further ado. At the turning point in Rome, he had an incredible one hour lead over the rest of the field. The little Ferrari was not up to the constant impetuous driving style of its pilot. When crossing the Apennines, the driver's seat broke out of its holder. Nuvolari quickly replaced it with a sack of oranges that he picked up at a market stall. Before the stop in Modena , he destroyed a shock absorber in the front , but since he was still in the lead 29 minutes ahead of Biondetti, Enzo Ferrari could not persuade him to give up either. Only when all the brakes on the car were defective just before Parma and the Ferrari could no longer be kept on the track did it give up, to the chagrin of the many millions of listeners on the radio. Strangely, the first spectator to see him on the completely wrecked car was a priest, the Nuvolari, physically at the end of the day, asked for a bed.

Nuvolari is said to have said to Enzo Ferrari after the race: “Enzo, days like this are rare at our age. We have to savor it as best we can. ”After Nuvolari's retirement, Biondetti won with a record lead of 28 minutes over Alberto Comirato's and his wife's wife Lia's Fiat 1100 Sport .
