The Ferrari 166 S also Ferrari 166 Sport was a racing car from 1948.

Background and technology

In the autumn of 1947, Gioacchino Colombo began the first revision of the 1.5-liter V12 engine for Enzo Ferrari . Ferrari used this first own engine in the different versions of the Ferrari 125 . Already in the Ferrari 159 the displacement was increased to 1.9 liters and in order to achieve more power, it was adjusted to 2 liters. Five of the 166 Sport were built. The Carrozzeria Allemano bodyworked three vehicles, including two road versions and a racing coupé. A fourth Allemano vehicle was an open Spider. Carrozzeria Touring contributed another coupe.

Ferrari used the box frame, the front double wishbones and the rear rigid axle of the 166 Spider Corsa for all vehicles . The bodies were made of aluminum , whereby the Spyder with a total weight of 700 kg was 200 kg lighter than the Coupé.

Racing history

The 166 S Berlinetta Touring was only used in a single race. Giovanni Bracco drove it in a race in Spain, the Villa Real in 1950 , but did not finish. The stakes of the other 166 sports were more successful. With the Allemano racing coupé, Clemente Biondetti won the Mille Miglia in 1948 for the Scuderia and the Targa Florio with the Spider together with Igor Trubetzkoiy in the same year .
