The Ferrari 312B was a Formula 1 car that Scuderia Ferrari built and used in 1970 and 1971.
Development history
In 1970 the Ferrari 312B ended a long period without a win for Scuderia in Formula 1. In 1969, the Italian car company Fiat joined Ferrari and created new structures. Above all, the new financial security ensured calm in the racing team. The 312B got a completely new chassis and a new engine. The twelve-cylinder engine in a 180 ° V arrangement made 460 hp at 2991 cm³. The engine was mounted in a rear extension of the chassis made of light metal sheets and pipes.
Racing history
Although the car was competitive from the start, it was not successful until the middle of the 1970 season . Jacky Ickx won the Austrian Grand Prix and at the end of the year the races in Canada and Mexico , but at the end of the season he finished second in the overall standings behind Jochen Rindt . The Austrian Lotus driver had a fatal accident in his Lotus 72 during training for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza and was posthumously world champion. Clay Regazzoni won the race in a 312B.
Mario Andretti won the South African Grand Prix with the 312B in 1971 , then the Scuderia brought the successor model, the 312B2 , to the racetracks from the race in Monaco .
