Mauro Forghieri (born January 13, 1935 in Modena ) is a former Italian engine and racing car designer.

Career

Forghieri studied mechanical engineering at the University of Bologna , did his doctorate and began teaching, but planned to go to California to work in the aviation industry.

Ferrari

Forghieri's father, who had worked for Ferrari in the 1930s , stood up for his son at Enzo Ferrari , who accepted the subsequent job offer in 1960. Just two years later, at the age of 26, Forghieri became sports director and chief designer, and Eugenio Dragoni became team principal in the Ferrari racing team. In 1970 he became technical director . He developed the cars as well as the engines with which Ferrari won four drivers 'world championships with John Surtees ( 1964 ), Niki Lauda ( 1975 and 1977 ) and Jody Scheckter ( 1979 ), as well as seven constructors' titles.

1981 Ferrari hired the British designer Harvey Postlethwaite to support Forghieri. However, the cooperation did not work as desired and after some political quarrels and a lack of success, Forghieri was transferred to another development department in 1985, while Postlethwaite was solely responsible for Formula 1. Forghieri stayed with Ferrari until 1987 when he switched to Lamborghini Engineering .

Lamborghini

Lamborghini Engineering was a branch of Lamborghini founded on the initiative of Chrysler boss Lee Iacocca . The aim of the new company headed by Daniele Audetto was initially to develop a Formula 1 engine. Forghieri designed a naturally aspirated V12 engine that was used in the Larrousse team from the 1989 season , but was later also used by other teams such as Lotus or Équipe Ligier . In 1990 Forghieri developed a Formula 1 chassis for Lamborghini Engineering, which, after a hapless start with a Mexican entrepreneur, was finally used in 1991 by a racing team called Modena Team . Forghieri was the team's technical leader in 1991. After the racing team had ceased operations at the end of 1991, Forghieri returned to Lamborghini Engineering and looked after the customer's engines that were used in Formula 1 until 1993.

According to Formula 1

In 1992 Forghieri developed a minivan with an electric drive for Enel . At the end of 92 he took over the position of technical director at Bugatti , where he stayed until 1994. In the same year, together with Franco Antoniazzi and Sergio Lugli in Modena, he founded Oral Engineering , a company for engine construction and development.

Forghieri was part of the commission of experts that should clarify the circumstances of Ayrton Senna's accidental death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix for the trial .
