Many famous racing cars and other technical innovations come from him, such as the first front wing construction, which was trend-setting for many other vehicles. For several decades, Postlethwaite was one of the best and most influential engineers in Formula 1. After Tyrrell was taken over by British American Tobacco , Postlethwaite switched to Honda , where he drove his own, ultimately abandoned Formula 1 program .

He died of heart failure in 1999 while testing the Honda team in Spain.
