The 1990 Formula 1 World Championship was the 41st season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races in the period from March 11, 1990 to November 4, 1990. Ayrton Senna won the drivers' world championship for the second time. McLaren became world constructors champions for the sixth time.

Changes in 1990

Racetracks

As in the previous year, a total of 16 races took place, with the host countries remaining the same. The Brazilian Grand Prix returned after ten years on the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet in Rio de Janeiro on the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo back its route, however, was significantly reduced compared with the previous host 1980th In addition, based on the experiences from the previous year, the US Grand Prix was moved from the middle of the season to the beginning, as the hot desert climate at the Phoenix Street Circuit had proven to be difficult for teams and spectators to tolerate.

Regulations

Larger rear-view mirrors and a quickly removable steering wheel were prescribed.

Teams

The only new team in the field was Life Racing , which competed with a specially designed W12 engine. Compared to the previous season, the two German racing teams Rial Racing and Zakspeed were no longer represented . Arrows came under the name Footwork after the entry of a sponsor. In contrast, the Italian racing team Coloni kept its name after the Japanese automobile company Subaru had acquired a majority stake.

Engine suppliers

Lamborghini Engineering , which had supplied the French Larrousse team in the previous year , has now also equipped the traditional British racing team Lotus . The Coloni team used a completely new engine, which installed a twelve-cylinder boxer engine from Motori Moderni , which was registered under the name of its majority owner Subaru . After this engine had proven to be unsuitable, Coloni bought back his shares from Subaru in the second half of the season and from then on resorted to Ford engines. All other teams stayed with their previous engine partners.

tires

Tire suppliers continued to be Goodyear and Pirelli , and some teams switched suppliers. Tyrrell switched from Goodyear to Pirelli, while Coloni was now supplied by Goodyear. The new racing team Life Racing relied on Pirelli.

Technical innovation

The Tyrrell 019 relied on a novel design of the front section, in which the vehicle nose was pulled up and the front wing was attached "hanging" underneath. This design allowed a better flow of air to the vehicle underbody and made the racing team, which was previously in the lower midfield, competitive despite the weak engine. This development was also very influential and was adopted by all teams until 1996.

driver

Gerhard Berger and Alain Prost exchanged their cockpits - the Austrian took the place of the reigning world champion at McLaren , who switched to Ferrari for it . Benetton surprised with the signing of ex-world champion Nelson Piquet , the new team-mate of Alessandro Nannini . Brabham in turn kept Stefano Modena , but replaced Martin Brundle with the Swiss Gregor Foitek .

Lotus lined up completely from scratch, for which Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly drove. In addition to Piquet, Satoru Nakajima had left the team and switched to Tyrrell, where he replaced Jonathan Palmer . There were also big changes at Footwork: Eddie Cheever had ended his career and Warwick had switched to Lotus, as mentioned. Newcomers to the team were Michele Alboreto and Bernd Schneider , who had previously been unsuccessful at Zakspeed , but who was replaced by former Dallara driver Alex Caffi after just one race and only made another appearance towards the end of the season.

At BMS Scuderia Italia, on the other hand, first Gianni Morbidelli succeeded Caffi, then Emanuele Pirro , who had finished the previous year at Benetton. The second cockpit, however, remained with Andrea de Cesaris . Minardi proceeded similarly, keeping his veteran Pierluigi Martini on board and giving the second cockpit to Paolo Barilla , who had already played for the team in the preseason instead of Luis Pérez-Sala .

There were also new driver pairings at Ligier and Larrousse: Nicola Larini and Philippe Alliot now drove for the former . The latter, like Michele Alboreto, had driven for Larrousse last year. There, in turn, Éric Bernard and Aguri Suzuki were used, both of whom had already contested several races for this team in previous years.

Osella, on the other hand, only used one car that was driven by Olivier Grouillard, who drove for Ligier the previous year . Last year's two drivers, Gabriele Tarquini and Piercarlo Ghinzani , were left behind. Coloni also competed with just one car, which was driven by Bertrand Gachot that year . On the other hand, EuroBrun brought two cars to the start, but occupied both cockpits with the previous Coloni driver Roberto Moreno and Claudio Langes . Gary Brabham made his debut for Life , before Bruno Giacomelli made a comeback after a seven-year absence there after two races .

There were no personnel changes only at Williams , Leyton House and AGS . Also Onyx began the season with the same drivers, with which it had finished the 1989 season, but was Stefan Johansson in turn replaced after only two races by Gregor Foitek, in turn, at the same time at Brabham by David Brabham had been replaced, the son of original team founder Jack Brabham .

After Senna had lost the lead position to his World Championship rival Prost at the start, he caused a collision with Prost in the first corner, where both drivers were eliminated. This left Senna's lead in the world championship at nine points, which Prost was unable to make up in the last race due to the rule of discarding results - Senna won his second world title early.
