Reports

background

There were no changes in the list of participants compared to the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

With Nigel Mansell , for the first time in the current season, not one of the two McLaren drivers Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna secured pole position. These followed in second and third in front of Mansell's Ferrari team- mate Alain Prost . Alessandro Nannini and Riccardo Patrese formed the third row ahead of Ivan Capelli , Thierry Boutsen and Nelson Piquet .

run

In the first corner, Berger took the lead from Mansell. Senna made a McLaren one-two lead in the second lap.

When, after around 30 laps, numerous drivers made a pit stop, the two Leyton House drivers Ivan Capelli and Maurício Gugelmin , who completed the race without changing their tires, came out on top. To the surprise of the experts, this one-two lead lasted for around 20 laps, although the pursuers had advantages from their fresh tires. It was not until the 54th lap that Prost passed Gugelmin, who had to give up shortly afterwards due to an engine failure. The reigning world champion caught up quickly on the leading Capelli, but only found an opportunity to overtake him three laps before the end of the race. Third was Senna. Piquet came fourth ahead of Berger and Patrese. Andrea De Cesaris , who actually finished 14th, was disqualified after the race because of an underweight vehicle.

Scuderia Ferrari celebrated the 100th Grand Prix victory in team history.
