Reports
background
There were no changes in the list of participants compared to the French Grand Prix that had taken place the previous weekend.
training
Nigel Mansell qualified for pole position in front of the two McLaren team- mates Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger . Thierry Boutsen followed ahead of Alain Prost , Jean Alesi , Riccardo Patrese and the two Larrousse pilots Éric Bernard and Aguri Suzuki .
run
Despite a better start, Mansell was unable to defend the lead against Senna during the first few meters of the race. Berger followed in third place ahead of Boutsen.
In the twelfth lap, Mansell managed to overtake Senna and thus to take the lead to the delight of the local crowd. Shortly afterwards, Senna spun and dropped to fifth behind Berger, Boutsen and Prost. A little later, he lost another five positions through a pit stop.
On lap 22 Mansell had to hand over the lead to Berger because he was hampered by an electrical fault. Nonetheless, he fought his way back to the top six laps later. Shortly afterwards, like Berger, he came under pressure from the faster Prost at the time. He finally overtook Berger on lap 31 and Mansell on lap 43. Both overtaken were unable to finish the race due to technical defects. Mansell, who compared to his team-mate Prost, who achieved the third victory in a row, had little success with the Ferrari 641 , was so disappointed that he spontaneously announced his retirement from Formula 1 to a small group of journalists at the end of the season.
With his renewed victory, Prost took the lead in the world championship standings from Senna, who finished third behind Boutsen in this race. Éric Bernard was fourth ahead of Nelson Piquet and Aguri Suzuki. The four points for the constructors' championship, which Larrousse would normally have allowed for fourth and sixth place, were not awarded, as the Lola LC90 vehicle used was not an in-house design of the team.
