The 2017 Grand Prix of Great Britain (officially 2017 Formula 1 Rolex British Grand Prix ) took place on July 16 at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone and was the tenth race of the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship .
report
backgrounds
After the Austrian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 20 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 35 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 33 points and Red Bull Racing with 135 points .
At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Compared to the previous year, several changes were made to the route. The number of tire stacks and TecPro barriers were increased in Abbey , Farm , Brooklands , Copse , Stowe and Vale , and a second row of curbs was installed in Copse and Club . The safety fence between Chapel and Stowe was renewed.
There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 30 meters after Aintree Corner and the measuring point was 25 meters before Village Corner . The second DRS zone was on Hangar Straight , 55 meters after the chapel , the measuring point was at the entrance of the Maggotts .
At this race, Ferrari used the engine update for the first time, which was already used in Austria by the Haas team.
Daniil Kwjat , Vettel (seven each), Kevin Magnussen , Jolyon Palmer , Sergio Pérez , Carlos Sainz jr. , Stoffel Vandoorne (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Hamilton (four times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Kimi Räikkönen and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Race stewards were Gerd Ennser (DEU), Nicky Moffitt (GBR), Nish Shetty (SIN) and Danny Sullivan (USA).
During the technical inspection before the race weekend, it was found that a tether was damaged on the Toro Rosso STR12 from Sainz, which was necessary to fix the bike in the event of an accident. Upon closer inspection of the tether it was found that the tether was not only damaged, but that several cut fibers were knotted together on it. The race stewards initiated an investigation against the team because they assumed that a safety-relevant component had been tampered with and that the team therefore had to know about the unsafe condition of the vehicle. This examination showed that no tampering was carried out on the tether. According to the manufacturer of the holding ropes, the knotted fibers are standard and the holding ropes have also been homologated . The defective tether was nevertheless replaced, among other things because the fibers showed signs of wear and dust, possibly from the brake system, was discovered on it.
free training
In the first free practice, Bottas set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 29.106 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. During this training session, Vettel was the first pilot to test the Shield safety system, which was being tested as an alternative to the Halo system for the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship .
In the second free practice, Bottas was again fastest in 1: 28.496 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen.
The best time in the third free practice was set by Hamilton in 1: 28.063 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Qualifying began on a wet track, which dried out in the course of the first segment, so that the fastest times were set in the last few seconds. Alonso was fastest. Daniel Ricciardo suffered a technical defect and was unable to set a fast lap time towards the end of the segment. Besides him, the Sauber drivers as well as Kevin Magnussen and Lance Stroll were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Massa, the Toro Rosso pilots, Alonso and Palmer were eliminated.
The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 26.600 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel. It was the 67th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, who was now only one pole position behind record holder Michael Schumacher . He also achieved fifth pole position in Great Britain, drawing level with record holder Jim Clark .
Bottas was moved five starting positions down due to a premature gear change. Ricciardo was relocated a total of 15 places due to a premature change of gearbox and engine. Alonso was also moved 30 places back due to the change of engine and transmission.
run
Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. It was Hamilton's 57th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, the fifth in Great Britain. Bottas achieved the seventh and Raikkonen the third podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Verstappen, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Vettel, Ocon, Pérez and Massa.
