report

backgrounds

After the Japanese Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 59 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and with 72 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . Only these three drivers had a chance of winning the world title. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 145 points and Red Bull Racing with 237 points . Only Mercedes and Ferrari could become constructors' world champions.

At the US Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, several minor changes were made to the route. Additional TecPro barriers were installed in the run-off zones of curve one , curve four , curve six , curve twelve and curve 19 . At the exit of turn eleven and turn 20 there were now three additional speed bumps and at the exit of turn nine the single curbs were replaced by double ones.

There were again two DRS zones, which remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the back straight and began 320 meters after turn eleven , the measuring point was 150 meters after turn ten . The second DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 80 meters after the last bend. The measuring point was 65 meters after curve 18 .

At the US Grand Prix, Renault provided the works team and all customer teams for the first time with a further developed version of the Renault RE17 , which already contained various engine components for the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship . In every team that starts with Renault engines, one driver was given this new expansion stage, while the second driver was to contest the rest of the season with the old version.

There were several driver changes before this Grand Prix. Carlos Sainz Jr. moved from Toro Rosso to Renault on loan, replacing Jolyon Palmer . Sainz was replaced at Toro Rosso by Daniil Kwjat , who only lost his place as a regular driver to Pierre Gasly two races earlier . Since Gasly could not take part in the US Grand Prix because of the season finale of the Super Formula , the second Toro Rosso cockpit was also filled. Brendon Hartley made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship here.

Kwjat (ten), Kevin Magnussen (seven), Stoffel Vandoorne , Vettel (five each), Nico Hülkenberg (four), Romain Grosjean , Kimi Räikkönen , Sainz, Max Verstappen (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Pascal Wehrlein (each two) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (five times) and Vettel (once) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix. Hamilton won the race once when it was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2007 .

Race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Dennis Dean (USA), Radovan Novak (CZE) and Mika Salo (FIN).

free training

In the first free practice session, which took place in changeable weather conditions, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 36.335 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas.

In the second free practice session, which took place on a dry track, Hamilton was again fastest ahead of Verstappen and Vettel with a lap time of 1: 35.279 minutes.

In the third free practice session, Hamilton was fastest in 1: 34.478 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest, but, like Bottas, Räikkönen and Vettel, used the supersoft mixture. All the other drivers drove Ultrasoft . Magnussen handicapped Perez when he was on a fast lap. The race stewards announced that Magnussen would be relocated by three starting positions, and he was also given one penalty point. The same penalty was imposed on Lance Stroll , who had also handicapped Grosjean on a fast lap, making him leave the track and drive over the grass to avoid an accident. Magnussen, the Sauber drivers, Hartley and Stroll were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was again fastest. In contrast to the other pilots, Verstappen spent his time on the supersoft mix. Hulkenberg did not drive in this segment because of the relocation pronounced against him. Next to him, Grosjean, Vandoorne, Kwjat and Massa were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 33.108 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was the 72nd pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. It was also his 117th start from the front row, with which he beat the record previously held by Michael Schumacher .

Because of the use of the sixth MGU-H and the fifth turbocharger and combustion engine, Hülkenberg was moved 20 starting places down this season. Hartley, who took over the engine parts used this season by Kwjat and Gasly, was moved down 25 starting positions this season due to the use of the sixth copy of the MGU-H and combustion engine as well as the fifth copy of the energy storage device and control electronics. Vandoorne was moved five starting positions down this season because of the use of the eighth internal combustion engine. After changing the engine before the third free practice session, Verstappen was also moved 15 starting positions down this season to use the sixth MGU-H and internal combustion engine. Magnussen and Stroll were moved three starting positions back in Q1 due to the handicaps of other pilots. Since Vandoorne's engine was swapped again after qualifying, the relocation increased from five to 30 this season due to the use of the eleventh copy of the MGU-H and turbocharger, the ninth copy of the combustion engine and the eighth copy of the MGU-K Starting places.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. It was the 62nd victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, the ninth of which this season. Vettel achieved the eleventh and Raikkonen the fifth place on the podium this season. For the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix , both Ferrari drivers were on the podium. The remaining points went to Verstappen, who had overtaken Raikkonen on the last lap but received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track, Bottas, Ocon, Sainz, Pérez, Massa and Kwjat.

Hamilton thus increased his lead over Vettel in the overall standings to 66 points, Bottas remained third. With only 75 maximum points to be achieved, he had no chance of winning the title. Mercedes won the constructors' championship early, it was the fourth title win in a row. Ferrari increased the lead over Red Bull to 113 points, so that with a maximum of 129 points still to be achieved in the constructors' championship, there was only a theoretical chance of being overtaken.
