The 2014 USA Grand Prix (officially 2014 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix ) took place on November 2 at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin and was the 17th race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Russian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 17 points from Nico Rosberg and 92 points from Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 223 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 349 points ahead of Williams .

At the US Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones. The first zone was on the back straight and began 320 meters after turn eleven, the measuring point was 150 meters after turn ten. The second DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 80 meters after the last corner. The measuring point was 65 meters after curve 18.

Kevin Magnussen , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Romain Grosjean , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (twice) and Sebastian Vettel (once) two former winners competed in this race.

The race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Garry Connelly (AUS), Tim Mayer (USA) and Derek Warwick (GBR).

In the run-up to the race, the takeover of the Caterham F1 team announced in June 2014 by the Arab-Swiss consortium Engavest SA failed. The team then stopped racing and did not compete in the US Grand Prix. On October 27, 2014 it was announced that Marussia had also entered bankruptcy and would not participate in the race. For the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix in 2005, only 18 vehicles competed in a Formula 1 World Championship race.

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton was the fastest ahead of Rosberg and Jenson Button . At Williams , Felipe Nasr drove in place of Valtteri Bottas , at Toro Rosso Max Verstappen instead of Jean-Éric Vergne . The track had little grip during this practice session, so several drivers had to leave the track at turn 19. There were no accidents. In the second free practice session, Hamilton was again the fastest ahead of Rosberg and Fernando Alonso . With Sebastian Vettel the transmission had to be changed. However, this has no consequences, as Vettel has to start from the pit lane due to the use of the sixth drive unit.

In the third free practice, Hamilton stayed in front of Rosberg. Felipe Massa came third. Rosberg had problems with the brakes during this session.

Qualifying

Due to the smaller number of participants, the qualifying format was slightly modified. It consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 14 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. Grosjean, Vettel, Esteban Gutiérrez and Vergne were eliminated. Vettel made no serious attempt to qualify as he had to start from the pit lane regardless of the qualifying result due to the use of a sixth engine unit.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was the fastest. The Force India pilots as well as Daniil Kwjat and Maldonado were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg finally achieved pole position in front of Hamilton and Bottas.

Button received a starting place penalty of five positions for a gearbox change, and Kwjat received a starting position penalty of ten positions for using a seventh internal combustion engine (ICE).

run

Hülkenberg, Kwjat and Vettel started on the medium compound, all other drivers started on the soft tire compound. Vettel started out of the box. Rosberg kept the lead at the start from Hamilton. On the first lap there was a collision between Pérez and Sutil, in which both drivers were eliminated. Pérez tried to overtake Raikkonen and drove into Sutil. The safety car came out to rescue Sutil's vehicle, Pérez drove back to the pits. Pérez was given two penalty points for causing the collision and a penalty transfer of seven positions for the next starting grid. Maldonado, Hülkenberg, Button, Gutiérrez and Vettel went to the pits to change tires. Vettel switched to the softer tire compound and a lap later back to the harder one. During the safety car phase, Maldonado, Gutiérrez and Vergne drove faster than the specified delta time. The three drivers received a time penalty of five seconds and one penalty point.

The race was reopened on the fifth lap. Rosberg stayed ahead of Hamilton, Massa and Bottas. Ricciardo passed Alonso. The Mercedes pulled away from the rest of the field in the next few laps. The first pit stop phase began on lap 14. Massa and Ricciardo first pitted. Massa stayed on the softer tire compound, Ricciardo switched to medium. One lap later, Rosberg and Bottas pitted, whereupon Rosberg decided to switch from soft to medium. Before the stop he was about two seconds ahead of Hamilton. Bottas fell behind Ricciardo at the stop. Hamilton followed one lap to Rosberg and stayed behind him. During the first pit stop phase, Hülkenberg rolled out with a technical problem.

After the first pit stop, Hamilton managed to catch up on Rosberg. On the 24th lap, Hamilton finally slowed past and took the lead. Hamilton immediately withdrew from Rosberg, so that it was no longer in the DRS time interval. During the second pit stop phase, Hamilton stopped ahead of Rosberg and stayed in the lead. Ricciardo went to a stop in front of Massa and with this tactic passed him to third position.

On lap 39, Maldonado received a five-second time penalty for driving too fast in the pit lane. At the time the penalty was pronounced, he was in 14th place. In the last third of the race, Alonso and Vettel pitted again. While Alonso only fell behind Vettel, who then pitted, Vettel lost some position, which he made up through overtaking maneuvers and was finally back behind Alonso. Vergne also overtook a few drivers, touching Grosjean lightly while overtaking and was subsequently given a five-second time penalty and a penalty point by the race management. Since Vergne and Maldonado had both received such a time penalty and in the end they were alone in this time window, the order at the finish was identical to the race result.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Ricciardo. Hamilton became the most successful British Formula 1 racing driver after victories. Massa was fourth, Bottas fifth. Alonso, Vettel, Magnussen, Maldonado and Vergne completed the top 10. It was Maldonado's first point placement of the season.

In the drivers and constructors' world championships, the first three positions remained unchanged. Only Hamilton and Rosberg still have a chance at the driver's world title. The title decision will only be made in the last race of the season, in which double points are awarded, as Hamilton cannot get a sufficient lead over Rosberg before this race. Rosberg can no longer win the title on his own, as Hamilton two second places are enough to win the title.
