report

background

After the Malaysian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 18 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 19 points ahead of Fernando Alonso . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 25 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 38 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The Bahrain Grand Prix was held for the tenth time, on the occasion of this anniversary the race did not start until 6 p.m. local time. This was the first time the race took place under floodlights .

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year, the measuring point for the first zone was ten meters before curve 9, the zone itself began at the end of the back straight, exactly 50 meters after curve 10. The measuring point for the second DRS zone was 108 meters before turn 14, the DRS could then be activated on the start-finish straight, 270 meters after turn 15.

Jules Bianchi , Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen went into the race weekend with two penalty points each.

With Alonso (three times), Felipe Massa , Sebastian Vettel (twice each) and Jenson Button (once), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Mazen Al Hilli (BRN), Lars Österlind (SWE), Vincenzo Spano (VEN) and Derek Warwick (GBR) acted as race stewards .

The 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix was the 900th race in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship. Button started a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the 250th time in his career.

After the Grand Prix weekend, official Formula 1 test drives took place on the track.

training

Hamilton set the fastest time in the first practice session ahead of his teammates Rosberg and Alonso. In this free practice three test drivers were used, so that for the first time this season vehicles changed their start numbers, as each test driver used his permanent start number and not that of the pilot. Robin Frijns took over the Caterham from Kamui Kobayashi , Felipe Nasr took over the Williams from Bottas and Giedo van der Garde took over the Sauber from Esteban Gutiérrez . In the second free practice session, the first three positions remained unchanged, with the best time being more than three seconds faster. Adrian Sutil and Max Chilton parked their vehicles with technical defects early. In the third free practice session, Hamilton kept the lead over Rosberg. Sergio Pérez finished third. Vettel stopped after a spin in the gravel trap and ended the training early.

Kimi Raikkonen damaged his chassis while jumping over the curbs at Turn 4 . The damage had no effect on the race weekend. However, as the damage spread, Ferrari prematurely stopped the test drives with this chassis after the Grand Prix weekend in order to be able to continue using the monocoque.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Nico Hülkenberg was the fastest. The two Mercedes drivers set their lap times on the harder of the two compounds, all other drivers achieved their best time with the softer compound. The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Sutil and Pastor Maldonado , who was only nine thousandths of a second slower than team-mate Romain Grosjean , were eliminated. All drivers qualified for the Grand Prix. Since Sutil had blocked an attempt to overtake Grosjean at the end of his warm-up lap, who was also on his warm-up lap at the time, he was penalized with two penalty points and a five positions back on the grid.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg took the lead. The Toro Rosso pilots as well as Grosjean, Gutiérrez, Hülkenberg and Vettel were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg stayed in front and took pole position ahead of his teammate Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo , who was moved ten positions back due to an uncertain clearance during the pit stop in the last race.

run

When entering the first corner, Hamilton is already in front of Rosberg

Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg at the start. Both Williams started well and took positions three and four, led by Massa. As in the previous race, there was contact between Magnussen and Raikkonen, but this time without damage to one of the vehicles. Vergne suffered a tire damage on the first lap, Bottas lost fourth place to Pérez. Seven drivers with Mercedes engines were at the top. Magnussen was the only driver with a Mercedes engine who was outside the top 10.

While the first drivers made their first pit stop, there was a collision between Sutil and Bianchi in the back of the field, Sutil was eliminated. The race stewards saw the blame on Bianchi and awarded him a 5-second time penalty and two penalty points. One lap after this incident there was a second retirement because Vergne gave up. Meanwhile, Pérez had also passed Massa and was in third place.

During the pit stops, the drivers who had stopped early benefited, so that Raikkonen was in front of Hülkenberg after the stops. However, Hulkenberg overtook him again after a short time. At the front, Rosberg attacked Hamilton, both drivers had not yet pitted at the time. Hamilton was the first of the two to complete his first pit stop and lost the lead for two laps to Rosberg. When changing tires, Rosberg opted for the harder tires, while Hamilton once again rode the softer compound.

There were a few duels behind the Mercedes drivers. After Bottas pitted for the second stop, Massa and Hülkenberg fought for third position. Pérez benefited from this duel and overtook his team-mate. Two laps later, Pérez and Hülkenberg passed Massa, and Massa then pitted for his second stop. Both Ferrari drivers, just like the Williams drivers on a three-stop strategy, were involved in battles for positions and were overtaken by several drivers. At the top, Hamilton, with the softer tires, was up to eight seconds ahead of Rosberg. During the second pit stop phase, Marcus Ericsson gave up due to a defect.

On lap 41 there was a collision between Maldonado and Gutiérrez. Maldonado came out of the pits and hit Gutiérrez Sauber's right rear wheel with his left front wheel in such a way that he overturned and came to a halt again on his wheels in the run-off zone of Turn 1 . The race was over for Gutiérrez, who was uninjured in the accident. There was a safety car phase to recover the vehicle . Maldonado continued driving and was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, three penalty points and a starting place penalty for the next race. During the safety car phase, Magnussen gave up with a technical problem.

The safety car phase brought the field closer together and the lapped drivers were allowed to lap back. Various drivers made their last pit stop. Hamilton now rode the harder, Rosberg the softer mixture. Rosberg's tires were still unused. Both Mercedes drivers were instructed by the team management not to collide with their team mate. Mercedes refrained from managing a stable.

Hamilton initially pulled away from Rosberg at the restart, while Vettel, whose Drag Reduction System (DRS) did not work consistently, was overtaken by Ricciardo. Button slowed down, had to let several vehicles pass and finally gave up shortly before the end of the race. Rosberg managed to catch up with Hamilton again and attacked him several times. However, Hamilton always managed to maintain the lead. In the meantime, Ricciardo also drove past Hülkenberg and was in fourth place behind Pérez, to whom he was continuously catching up.

Mercedes managed another double victory with Hamilton ahead of Rosberg. Pérez finished third and was on the podium for the first time for Force India . Ricciardo achieved his best Formula 1 position to date in fourth. The top 10 completed Hülkenberg, Vettel, Massa, Bottas, Alonso and Räikkönen.

Rosberg kept the lead in the drivers' championship before Hamilton, who reduced the gap. Hulkenberg took the third position. In the constructors' world championship, Mercedes extended its lead. Force India took second place from McLaren, who were now third.

Comments from the first three drivers

“It's been a long time since I've had a race like this. My weekend had started well, but in qualifying and in the race, I didn't have outstanding pace. I knew that I needed a good start and that I had to take the first corner as the leader. From then on it was just an amazing fight. It was a very fair duel, but it was really difficult to keep him behind. He was super quick on the soft tires. "

- Lewis Hamilton

“There was a situation when he went a bit over the limit. But all in all, it was tough racing with the necessary respect. It was full of struggle and very intense. There was a lot of action in the car, I can tell. I partly yelled in my helmet, I was so energetic. I wanted to win the thing, but unfortunately it didn't work. "

- Nico Rosberg

“It has been some time since my last podium finish. This is something special today because it's only my third race for this team. It was a tight strategy and didn't look so good for a long time, because the three-stopper put pressure on. "

- Sergio Pérez
