The 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix took place on March 14th at the Bahrain International Circuit in as-Sachir and was the first race of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

For the first time since 2006 the season opener took place on the Bahrain International Circuit. The design of the racetrack was also new, with a new section added between turns 4 and 15. This changed the length of the route by 887 meters - from 5.412 to 6.299 kilometers. From the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship , however, the original and shorter route variant will be used again.

Lotus , HRT and Virgin started as new teams for the first time. The Constructors' World Champion Brawn GP was taken over by Mercedes and renamed the Mercedes Grand Prix . For the German car manufacturer, it meant returning to Formula 1 as a works team. The BMW Sauber team was bought back by Peter Sauber .

Karun Chandhok , Lucas di Grassi , Nico Hülkenberg , Witali Petrow and Bruno Senna made their Formula 1 debut. Michael Schumacher returned to Formula 1 after a three-year break for Mercedes, contested his 250th Grand Prix and Pedro de la Rosa returned to Formula 1 as a driver for Sauber. Timo Glock and Felipe Massa , who had to pause a few races after accidents in the preseason, were also back at the start . World champion Jenson Button contested his first race for McLaren- Mercedes.

With Fernando Alonso , Massa (twice each), Schumacher and Button (once each), all of the former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Nico Rosberg on the return of Mercedes as a works team to Formula 1

For the first time since 1993 , refueling was prohibited in the race. In addition, a new points system was introduced in which the ten best pilots received points for the first time. Furthermore, for the first time since 1995 , 24 pilots were registered for the race. In addition, it was the first Grand Prix in which a former racing driver was used as a race steward. The four-time Formula 1 world champion Alain Prost took on this task at the season opener.

training

In the first free practice session of the season, Force India Mercedes driver Adrian Sutil set the fastest lap. Fernando Alonso and Robert Kubica followed in second and third place . In the second free practice session, Nico Rosberg took the lead in the field. Lewis Hamilton finished second ahead of Rosberg's team-mate Schumacher. In the third free practice on Saturday, Alonso set the fastest lap ahead of Rosberg and Mark Webber .

HRT Cosworth driver Chandhok was unable to drive on the track in any training session because his racing car was not yet ready to drive due to missing parts.

Qualifying

Felipe Massa returned to Formula 1 after his accident

As in the third free practice session, Alonso achieved the fastest lap in the first part of qualifying. The HRT, Lotus and Virgin pilots and Jaime Alguersuari were eliminated. In the second qualifying phase, Sebastian Vettel took the lead in the field. The Sauber and Williams pilots as well as Vitantonio Liuzzi , Sébastien Buemi and Petrow were eliminated. Vettel was also the fastest in the last part of qualifying and thus secured pole position . Massa and Alonso started the race from second and third place.

run

At the start of the first race of the season, Vettel kept the lead from Alonso, who was able to overtake his teammate Massa before the first corner. There were also other postponements: Mercedes driver Rosberg overtook Hamilton and his teammate Schumacher, like Button, passed Webber. Webber lost some oil on the first corner, which triggered a cloud of smoke and Sutil collided with Kubica after a spin. Sutil and Kubica lost some places as a result. Unlike Kubica, his teammate Petrov got off to a good start on his debut and improved from 17th to eleventh place.

Nico Hulkenberg made his debut in Bahrain

After the first lap, the race was over for Chandhok, as he had spun after a driving error. For di Grassi, too, the race was over after a short time, as he had to complain about a hydraulic defect on lap three. The first three pilots gradually separated themselves from the rest of the field, keeping their distances between them constant. Before the leading group made their pit stops, Kamui Kobayashi and Petrow retired with technical problems and Glock had to retire a little later.

Kubica was the first to pit in the eleventh lap. After the other teams saw that the Pole was setting the fastest lap times, the teams reacted and Hamilton and Schumacher began their pit stops. Within the next two laps, the remaining drivers, who were in the top eight places, came to make their pit stop. The only shift in this was when Hamilton moved past Rosberg.

After Senna was eliminated in the 19th lap, only Lotus was in the race among the new racing teams. At the top the situation changed insofar as the Ferrari were able to reduce their gap to Vettel a little. After de la Rosa had also ended his race prematurely with a technical defect, Alonso increased his pressure on Vettel and was able to catch up with the Red Bull driver. However, his tires couldn't withstand the stresses and he had to slow down a bit first.

A little later, however, the Spaniard finally passed Vettel. He was helped by the fact that the German could no longer drive with full commitment due to a technical defect. While it was suspected that his exhaust was damaged during the course of the race, it turned out after the race that a spark plug in his Renault engine was responsible for the loss of power. One lap after Alonso also overtook his team-mate Massa Vettel and gave Scuderia a double lead.

Eleven laps before the end, Vettel had to give up third place to Hamilton. However, his lead over fifth-placed Rosberg was so great that he retained fourth place. In the end, Alonso won his first race for Ferrari ahead of Massa. Hamilton crossed the finish line in third behind the Ferrari drivers. The other points went to Vettel, Rosberg, Schumacher, Button, Webber, Liuzzi and Barrichello.

Shortly before the end of the race, Buemi and Jarno Trulli also had to park their cars. Both came into the ranking, however.

Alonso became the fifth Ferrari driver with his victory after Juan Manuel Fangio ( 1956 ), Mario Andretti ( 1971 ), Nigel Mansell ( 1989 ) and Kimi Raikkonen ( 2007 ), who won his debut race for the Italians. The Spaniard took over the leading position in the drivers' world championship again after almost three years. He last led this ranking after the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix .
