The Virgin VR-01 is a Formula 1 racing car and was the vehicle used by Virgin Racing in the 2010 Formula 1 season .
The Virgin VR-01 is the first formula racing car that was developed exclusively on the computer using numerical fluid mechanics . The car was designed by Nick Wirth , whose team made a serious mistake during development due to incorrect calculations or the information available on the fuel density: The fuel tank was too small, so that the Virgin pilots Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi at the time did so well how impossible it was to drive a whole Grand Prix distance without a refueling stop. However, since refueling in Formula 1 was forbidden in 2010 and the chassis of the vehicles could not be converted during the season, the team had to apply for a special permit from the FIA .
The car, which rolled out on February 4th and was built by Dallara , was powered by the 2.4-liter Cosworth CA2010 V8 engine . During the test drives in Jerez and Barcelona there were repeated problems with the hydraulics.
At the first race of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix , both VR-01s failed due to technical defects. Di Grassi had another defect in the hydraulics and Glock had to park his racing car prematurely after a gearbox damage.
After another double failure at the race in Australia , Lucas di Grassi reached the first finish for a Virgin Formula 1 racing car with 14th place in the Malaysian Grand Prix .
