Nick Wirth

Nicholas "Nick" Wirth (born March 26, 1966 ) is a British motorsport engineer and aerodynamicist .

Wirth studied at University College London and was the youngest graduate of the Royal Institute of Mechanical Engineers. His motorsport career began with March , where he worked as an aerodynamicist in the late 1980s.

In 1989, Wirth founded the motorsport technology company Simtek Research Ltd. together with the later FIA President Max Mosley . and entered the Formula 1 world championship in 1994 with its own racing team under the name Simtek . In the third race of the season, the Austrian Roland Ratzenberger had a fatal accident with the Simtek S941 in qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix . Wirth, who acted as team boss and technical director, had to file for bankruptcy with his racing team in June 1995 and ended his involvement in Formula 1.

From 1996 to 1999, Wirth worked as chief designer at Benetton and in 2006 at the FIA. In 2007 he developed the Acura ARX-01 and from 2010 to mid-2011 was again active in Formula 1 as Technical Director of Virgin Racing through his company Wirth Research .
