Christoph 2 is a civil protection helicopter of the Federal Ministry of the Interior ( Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief ), which is temporarily stationed at the headquarters of Rotorflug Airservices in Friedrichsdorf .

history

The air rescue in Frankfurt am Main or the story of "Christoph 2" began in January 1962 with a motion from the Frankfurt city council that provided for the "procurement of a helicopter for the ambulance". But despite the efforts of the Frankfurt am Main fire brigade under fire director and pioneer Ernst Achilles , only 16 urgent relocation flights could be carried out in cooperation with the German armed forces and the US armed forces until 1967 .

Finally, on April 11, 1968, a Boeing-Vertol H-21 C of the Army Aviation Troop started under the radio call name "Florian Frankfurt Helicopter 1" from the garden of the Accident Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. He was in accordance with DIN 75080 similar to a former emergency ambulance equipped, but additionally led crushing tools , a hydraulic rescue set , several working lines and two 12 kg powder extinguisher with. The crew consisted of two pilots and an on-board mechanic from the Bundeswehr, an emergency doctor from the accident clinic, two paramedics and an operations manager from the Frankfurt fire brigade, who could take care of a maximum of four lying and four seated patients. The operational radius was 15 flight minutes and the operations were coordinated with the help of a command bus of the Frankfurt fire brigade. The helicopter was called to cause around 15 serious accidents on a total of eight days on the Easter and Whitsun holidays.

But although the helicopter had proven itself in the test, it took more than four years for a rescue helicopter to be stationed in Frankfurt am Main. The reason for this was the unclear financing situation. On August 15, 1972, a Bölkow Bo 105 CB of the Federal Border Police was officially put into service. Until the 1980s, "Christoph 2" had to struggle with acceptance problems, so there was talk of "patient theft", allegedly superfluous operations and noise pollution. In addition, the landing zone in the entrance area of the hospital was not ideal, so it was not uncommon for vehicles to be parked there or people ignoring the security area .

In 1982 it was renamed “Christoph Frankfurt” for five months, after which it was given its previous radio call name. In 1996 the Bo 105 CB was replaced by a slightly longer CBS-5 of the same type. After two and a half years of construction, the air rescue center on the 12th and 13th floors of the professional association accident clinic went into operation in 1997. On February 29, 2008, the Bo 105 CBS-5 was replaced by a Eurocopter EC 135 T2i. "Christoph 2" has been stationed at the Rotorflug Airservices headquarters in Friedrichsdorf - Burgholzhausen since October 5, 2017 , because the landing platform of the air rescue station in Frankfurt am Main is being extensively renovated. The normal landing area of the BG-Unfallklinik is still available, so that a helicopter can land at any time.

today

The rescue helicopter is ready for use every day from sunrise (around 7 a.m.) to sunset. Its operational radius is around 60 kilometers, but an alarm can also be issued beyond that if necessary.

Every year he is alerted to over 1,100 (2018: 1,127) missions, with traffic and work accidents being the most common causes. Accordingly, more than half of all missions (> 50,000) involved multiple trauma patients.

The medical equipment complies with DIN EN 13718. In addition, an ultrasound device is used for preclinical sonography and the helicopter is used as a child comforter on "Christoph 2".

The crew consists of a doctor from the Accident Clinic Frankfurt am Main, an emergency paramedic from the Frankfurt am Main fire department and a pilot from the Fuldatal Federal Police Air Force.

Others

The name Christoph goes back to St.  Christopher  , the patron saint of travelers. After him, all German rescue helicopters have the  BOS radio call name Christoph, followed by a number for rescue helicopters and a description of the location for intensive-care transport helicopters .
