Christoph Regensburg is one of currently 16 intensive care transport helicopters (ITH) in Germany, but is used for both primary missions (emergency rescue) and secondary missions ((intensive) transfer flights, so-called interhospital transports). There are a total of nine such “dual-use” helicopters in Germany. The helicopter of the type Eurocopter EC 145 (BK 117 C-2) , which has been in use since July 2010 and which replaced a BK 117 and is equipped with a front-mounted searchlight of the type SX-5 "starburst", is stationed and is being stationed at the air rescue center at the Regensburg University Hospital operated by the DRF Luftrettung non-profit GmbH. On May 29, 2015, the EC 145 was replaced by a new H 145.

Calls

Christoph Regensburg performs around 1,300 assignments per year (1,235 assignments in 2015), around 60% of which are primary assignments. Due to the proximity to the Danube and the Bavarian Forest, the helicopter is often called for water and mountain rescue missions in the area of emergency rescue. Furthermore, Christoph Regensburg is used for secondary relocations. These are performed when patients need to be transferred from one clinic to another for better medical care. The helicopter is one of three intensive-care transport helicopters in Bavaria that are operational 24 hours a day. At night, in addition to relocations, primary operations can also be carried out according to special procedures. Regensburg is the second air rescue station in Germany that is allowed to use night vision devices, so-called "Night Vision Goggles", for operations in the dark. Christoph Regensburg is alerted by the Regensburg Integrated Control Center ( ILS ) for primary operations and by the ITH Munich Coordination Office (KITH) for secondary relocations.

Application area

The area of operation extends mainly over Eastern Bavaria , but neighboring countries and regions are also part of the operational range. The helicopter can reach any place within a 70-kilometer radius in an average of 20 minutes.

history

In September 1994, Christoph Regensburg was founded in cooperation with the Arbeiter Samariter Bund and the company HDM-Flugservice. It was originally designed as a 24-hour intensive care transport helicopter to close the gap in medical care for people from Regensburg and the surrounding area, as the transfer of intensive care patients was only possible to a limited extent or not at all due to technical difficulties and the poor equipment of the rescue helicopter. At that time a Bell 412 was used, which was replaced by a BK 117 after several years of work. Due to the increasing number of alarms about primary operations, the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior made the change to a "dual-use" helicopter, which functions both as an intensive care transport helicopter and as a rescue helicopter.
