Christoph 27 is the radio call name of the rescue helicopter of the DRF Luftrettung , which was made available for air rescue in Nuremberg and emergency locations in the vicinity.

Station, use and occupation

The DRF Luftrettung helicopter is stationed at Nuremberg Airport. It is open daily from sunrise , at the earliest 7:00 until sunset , in readiness . He is alerted by the control center in Nuremberg or the coordination center for intensive care transport helicopters in Munich for rescue operations with an emergency doctor's indication if an emergency medical vehicle (NEF) is not available in time or the type of injury makes it necessary to transport a patient by helicopter.

During his missions, Christoph 27 is manned by a pilot from DRF Luftrettung, an emergency doctor from the clinics in Nuremberg, Fürth, Neumarkt or the University Hospital Erlangen and an emergency paramedic from DRF Luftrettung. The paramedics are part of the helicopter crew (HEMS crew members), support the pilot in the areas of communication and navigation and act as winch operators, while the paramedic is legally a passenger . Standard equipment is a rescue winch with a 90 m rope length, which is mounted on the left side. The rescue winch is used for winch rescues in Franconian Switzerland. Christoph 27 cooperates closely with the height rescue group of the professional fire brigade Nuremberg and the BRK mountain rescue service .

A small Piper PA-28 aircraft (manned by 2 pilots) and a DRF rescue helicopter with the identification “D-HDRV” (manned by two pilots), which was mainly used in Nuremberg as “Christoph 27”, were deployed on 23 January 2018 around 1 p.m. near Oberhausen-Rheinhausen / Philippsburg in the Karlsruhe district in a tragic accident in the air and crashed. Four people were killed in the accident.

operator

The first operator of the Christoph 27, which at that time was still in use under the nickname SAR 74 , had been the Bundeswehr since it went into operation on July 1, 1973 , and in 1998 the DRF Luftrettung took over.

Helicopter type

DRF Luftrettung has been using a Eurocopter EC 135 for Christoph 27 at the LRZ Nuremberg since 2010. Before that it was a Eurocopter BK 117 .

Others

The name Christoph goes back to St. Christopher . In iconography , Christophorus is often depicted as a giant with a staff who carries the baby Jesus on his shoulders across a river. He is one of the fourteen helpers in need and is best known today as the patron saint of travelers. After him, all German rescue helicopters have the BOS radio call name Christoph , followed by a number for rescue helicopters and a description of the location for intensive care transport helicopters.
