Christoph 54 is the call sign for a rescue helicopter of the DRF Air Rescue , of the airfield Freiburg near the University Hospital Freiburg is stationed and the region Freiburg covers. It is also used as an intensive care transport helicopter for the state of Baden-Württemberg .

history

A rescue helicopter has been stationed at Freiburg Airport since the station was founded on March 10, 1993. First of all, he started his missions near the tower building. In January 2002 the hangar for the rescue helicopter was completed and this was given its own landing pad. The building was renovated in 2008. The missions were flown from March 1993 to December 1, 2019 with an MBB / Kawasaki BK 117 . Until 2002 the call sign was "Flugwacht Freiburg 71". In 2005, Christoph 54 completed his ten thousandth mission.

On January 5, 2009, the rescue helicopter was hit by a truck that was about to park. The helicopter landed earlier on the occasion of an emergency call. The machine was slightly damaged in the collision.

In the summer of 2013, the DRF Luftrettung station in Freiburg celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Freiburg airfield. While the emergency machine kept going on emergency missions, interested visitors were able to view a second helicopter of the same type. There were also several rescue organizations on site, whose vehicles could also be examined.

On December 1, 2019, the air rescue station in Freiburg received a new machine with a rescue winch. Since then an H145 from Airbus Helicopters has been in use. Christoph 54 is now primarily used as a rescue helicopter and for winch rescue , but is still used as an intensive care transport helicopter . On January 24, 2020, the machine was ceremoniously handed over in the presence of representatives of the DRF Luftrettung, the University Clinic and St. Josef Hospital Freiburg, the city of Freiburg, politics, the Freiburg professional fire brigade and the Black Forest mountain rescue service.

An expert opinion for air rescue in Baden-Württemberg recommends that rescue helicopters in Baden-Württemberg be raised from eight to ten. A suitable location for a new rescue helicopter would be Lahr. In the course of this, Christoph 54's station would be relocated a few minutes by flight to the southeast in the Kirchzarten / Todtnau region . The entire implementation would take around two to five years.

tasks

His tasks include emergency operations (traffic accidents, internal emergencies, falls, etc.) as well as transfer flights from clinic to clinic. Hikers and motorcyclists who have had an accident often have to be rescued in summer and skiers injured in winter. It is also available for winch rescues in the entire southern Baden region. The DRF Luftrettung cooperates with the Black Forest Mountain Rescue Service .
