The DRF Luftrettung (formerly Deutsche Rettungsflugwacht eV ) based in Filderstadt is part of the German rescue service in the field of air rescue .

history

In Germany at the beginning of the 1970s, the accidental death of the boy Björn Steiger revealed a lack of availability in immediate medical emergency aid. His parents then founded the rescue service foundation Björn Steiger eV (today Björn Steiger Foundation ), whose initiative in 1972 to found the " German rescue service German Air-Rescue (abbreviated DRF)" e. V. led. On March 19, 1973 the first rescue operation by helicopter took place.

In 1999, a scandal uncovered by Der Spiegel shook both the DRF and the Björn Steiger Foundation.

After its reorganization in 2008, it is now called DRF Luftrettung . It consists of a support association, whose president is Rudolf Böhmler, and a foundation, both of which are non-profit. Together they run the DRF Foundation Air Rescue, a non-profit corporation that operates the rescue stations with their helicopters . ARA-Flugrettungs GmbH also belongs to DRF Luftrettung in Austria and Falck DRF Luftambulance A / S in Denmark.

In Germany, DRF Luftrettung is the largest non-commercial air rescue service after ADAC Luftrettung.

In 2014, DRF Luftrettung performed a total of 37,861 missions, which corresponds to a decrease of 0.84% compared to the previous year (38,180 missions), of which 35,368 were missions in Germany.

On January 1, 2015, the previous subsidiary HSD Luftrettung non-profit GmbH was integrated into the DRF Foundation Luftrettung non-profit AG and dissolved.

On September 15, 2016, DRF Luftrettung announced that the previously existing subsidiary HDM Luftrettung non-profit GmbH was incorporated into the DRF Foundation Luftrettung non-profit AG with retroactive effect from January 1, 2016 . This means that all HDM air rescue stations were transferred to the DRF and are also operated by the DRF.

On January 23, 2018, there was an accident with a DRF rescue helicopter after it had started on a training flight from Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport . Near Oberhausen-Rheinhausen ( Karlsruhe district ), the helicopter collided with a small aircraft in the air for an unexplained cause. Four people died in the accident. There were two people in each of the two aircraft. The small plane came from Basel and was on its way to Speyer.

In April 2019, DRF Luftrettung took over 100% of the shares in Northern HeliCopter GmbH (NHC) in Emden from AG Ems with retroactive effect from January 1, 2019 .

tasks

Since it was founded on September 6, 1972, the company has been committed to providing rapid assistance to emergency patients. In the beginning, DRF Luftrettung in Germany only operated air rescue with rescue helicopters . Since the 1980s it has also provided several intensive care transport helicopters , such as B. in Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Halle, Hanover, Berlin, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Freiburg, Dortmund, Bremen, Bad Berka, some of which can also be used at night. In total, helicopters fly at 31 stations of the DRF Air Rescue.

In addition, return flights from abroad are carried out with ambulance aircraft . The aircraft are based at Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport . This benefit is granted to the sponsoring members of the DRF eV who pay annual contributions for their membership and are insured accordingly within the framework of this sponsoring membership. Holidaymakers, business people and others can also use this service for an appropriate fee. The operations are coordinated by the DRF's own operations center, which is located at Karlsruhe / Baden Airport.

Air Rescuer Day

The Air Rescue Day took place for the first time on March 19, 2020. It was brought into being by the DRF Luftrettung to educate and inform about the important work of the air rescuers.

The annual day of action is intended to answer questions about everyday life, the sequence of operations and the experiences of the air rescuers and give those interested a look behind the scenes. Due to the measures to cope with the coronavirus crisis, it took place exclusively online on the social media channels in the first year: with videos, stories and interviews by and with the crew members of the individual stations.

The hashtag #wirhubschraubern bundles the day's actions as a connecting element.

Why on March 19th?

On March 19, 1973, the DRF Luftrettung (at that time still Deutsche Rettungsflugwacht eV) took off for the first time with a rescue helicopter to help a person in need as quickly as possible.

Furnishing

MBB / Kawasaki BK 117

There are over 60 helicopters at home and abroad that are painted in red and white.

Helicopters of the types MBB / Kawasaki BK 117 / EC 145 / H145, EC 135 / H135 are used . The Bell 412 helicopters were retired at the end of 2015. In 2014, DRF Luftrettung was the first operator in the world to take over an Airbus Helicopters H145 machine that went into operation at the Munich station. The conversion of the BK117 fleet to H145 is now almost complete.

Two Learjet 35 A aircraft are also used to repatriate sick and injured people worldwide . The machines were specially converted for this purpose and equipped with intensive care equipment. The two jets are stationed at Karlsruhe-Baden Airport. The operation center is also located at Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport, from which the ambulance flights are coordinated and the helicopter fleet is monitored. Also in the immediate vicinity is the helicopter yard, which opened in 2013, where maintenance work can be carried out on eleven helicopters at the same time.
