The Halle-Oppin airfield is located east of the village of Oppin in the Saale district and was built from 1968 to 1971.
The airfield operated by the Society for Sport and Technology was used to train glider pilots and parachutists . The founding of the club for parachuting in Halle / Oppin initiated a development in competitive sports up to the top of the world. From 1972 to 1990 parachutists from Oppin won a total of 31 medals at world championships alone.
When the Halle - Oppin location was expanded to become the center of excellence for skydiving in the GDR , the glider pilots had to move to the neighboring Renneritz airfield .
After the fall of the Wall, the airfield will be operated by the Halle-Oppin GmbH airfield company.
In addition to various aircraft yards, there are also two flight schools and various clubs on the site. The model flying club even has its own "runway" in the northern part of the field.
The Flugsportverein Halle-Oppin eV uses the northern part of the field for gliding and motor gliding. For the first time, the FSV-Oppin hosted the state championships in distance gliding from July 15 to 24, 2005. In 2007, the Open State Championship in distance gliding, which is also a qualifying competition for the German Junior Championship 2008, will also be organized by the Halle-Oppin Aviation Association from August 5 to 12, 2007.
