A sticker is usually a printed product made of paper or plastic that is printed on one side and equipped with a self-adhesive surface on the other side .
In the usual form, stickers are particularly popular with children and are usually available as decals . Stickers can also be bold advertising media . There are also stickers with political motifs: they are often sold at punk concerts. The nationality symbol of a motor vehicle, if it is not part of the registration number, is usually in the form of a sticker. Labels are often designed in the form of a sticker. In contrast to the rubber coating , the adhesive surface does not have to be moistened. Stickers come in very different forms.
Adhesive label
An adhesive label in a wide variety of materials acts as an information carrier or advertising medium . The composition of the adhesive label varies depending on the application. The adhesive label consists of the upper material, the adhesive, a silicone layer and, in the original state of the self-adhesive label, the carrier material, usually paper or cardboard, on which it is available.
Uses for adhesive labels are price tags and barcodes on goods, booklet and book labels in schools to identify the owner, labels on packaging made of glass or metal (in the commercial as well as in the private sector), memos to identify all conceivable objects or to decorate them. The now most common form of sticker, made of plastic film and provided with an adhesive layer, was developed by Dr. hc Werner Jackstädt and his Wuppertal-based company Jac on the world market. Jackstädt was the owner of the patents for this invention for many decades. In 2002 the company, which last had 2100 employees, was sold to the US competitor Avery Dennison . The Jackstädt couple contributed their joint fortune to the Werner Jackstädt Foundation .
Materials for adhesive labels can be:
- Paper (uncoated, matt coated, gloss coated (simple machine coating), cast coated)
- Plastic ( PE , PP , PVC , PET )
- Special materials ( Tyvek ), polyolefins
Options for equipping with information:
- Direct thermal (thermosensitive layer in the material that changes color when heated. Usually black but also red, blue and black / red and blue / red available)
- Thermal transfer (color material is transferred to the surface by heating)
Depending on the constellation, the color material can also be "burned" into the surface. Printing methods for labels are: digital printing, offset printing , screen printing , flexographic printing , letterpress printing.
The following types of adhesives are defined: rubber / resin, synthetic rubber , silicone / rubber / resin and acrylate . Synthetic rubber and acrylate adhesives are mainly used for adhesive labels.
Sticker
The term Sticker (of English sticker = sticker) refers to a small sticker on the front of which is a symbol and / or motif painted, drawn or printed.

Regional names
A Bapperl is in the narrower sense a sticker, possibly also a badge. The term is a dialect expression from the Bavarian region and is sometimes also used in the computer sector for graphic symbols that are used in the form of a pictogram to perform a designation function. In this respect , it is used related to the signet and understood as a graphic counterpart to the logogram . Bapperl comes from the colloquially used verb "pappen" for "glue".
Analogous to this, there is the term Pickerl in Austria , which comes from the colloquial word “picken”. It is used for all types of stickers and labels, but it stands in particular for the assessment sticker and the motorway vignette .
Silhouette sticker
A silhouette sticker is a special type of sticker that is usually monochrome and shows a striking silhouette of an animal, landmark, country or island (e.g. Sylt).
