Badge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Pickerl is a word that is used specifically in Austria ( Austriazismus ) for a sticker or label. Most of the time, the term is used in connection with inspection stickers such as the motor vehicle inspection sticker . Foreign drivers who use Austria as a transit country usually associate it with the motorway vignette , while in Vienna the fee- based parking sticker allows drivers to park in the residential district without filling out a parking ticket.

The badge became a topic for the media during the oil crisis after the Yom Kippur War , when the car-free day was enacted in Austria . The day on which motorists were prepared to give up their motor vehicle had to be signaled with a sticker on the windshield. The Minister of Commerce responsible for this campaign, Josef Staribacher , was nicknamed “Pickerl-Pepi”.

Aside from motor traffic, you can find “stickers” in the canteens of the University of Vienna, for example . There, the “Mensa-Pickerl” entitles the Austrian Students' Union to a price reduction on every cafeteria menu.

When buying refrigerators in Austria, from 1993 onwards, the Environment Forum Household (UFH) collected a disposal fee. This contribution was proven by a sticker, the so-called "refrigerator sticker". This action was stopped in 2005 and those affected were able to apply for a refund.

When purchasing electrical appliances for the household (fridges, washing machines, ...), the “energy sticker” provides information about the energy consumption and consequently about the operating costs of the device.
